I reckon Boeing probably spent less time working on the B17 than I have, but now there is light at the end of the tunnel! The pic quality is poor, but you can see what is now working! All I need to do now is to add in all the stuff I did before to the new model, and she will be ready for release. Hope to have it ready for next week sometime! The nose will come away when shot... The unfortunate tailgunner can get...er...affected by gunfire! and my personal favourite, the 'whoops my tail has a bloody great hole in it' damage shot. The tail is made up of two fins, which together make up the total air area etc. Lose 1, the model is revealed, and the tail is less effective. Crude but effective! When you lose the nose, the bombadier and navigator are lost. To be grafted on are: Damage LODs for the engines, gear damage, smoking and flaming wings and engines, and if I can find out why it broke last time, smoke on startup. One day, I will put waist gunner models in there too. But lets check out those framerates! And that will just about do it! IP: Logged |

Well you all know how I feel about the B-17! I also bought this sim originally for that plane, and still take it around the patch once in awhile. Thanks to those who put time in on this project and thank you wakeup tailgunner for your persistance. ------------------ Hawk http://rcwarbirds.com/ IP: Logged |

Jaguar, yes please on the prop-fix, I've mailed you too, just to be sure. Memphis Belle....oh yes... That was part of the reason why this is a B17E. As you can see from the top picture, the chin turret has been removed....(he he) Other E changes include removal of glass from the waist gunners position. This way, the B17G stays standard for online use, and this can be flown by us off-liners. Preservation of the standard and all that! Alpha release for bug reports and issues soon! (see original post for wildly innaccurate release schedule) The rest of the work is just cut'n'paste' apart from finding out which LOD has the extra astrodome on it's 1st LOD. You can see it through the screen..... I MAY even try putting my waist gunner models in and the turret with a man in it for the mid-upper. A bomb aimer model was tried too, sitting on the nose-chair. All these will be tried elsewhere, and pasted into the model. When the framerates drop....the add-ins stop! IP: Logged |

WT, When all is said and done would you consider updating the damage models for the g and f versions. The improvements you are making to this should find their way in to the online standard (without negative fps effects). The challenge with model divergence is we end up with multiple versions of similar planes with inconsistent characteristics. Keeping them consistent becomes a huge job. I like the idea of the separate version for early beta release but I'm sure most of us will want to fly the updated version online as soon as it proves itself. Spin IP: Logged |

No Problem! The DM update is an integral part of what I am doing to the '17. Most of the effects shown above would have little impact on the stock B17 anyway. The whole thing blows up at the drop of a cannon shell! I was amazed at the amount of punishment a B17 could take and still come home. I felt this could be shown in the game, but wasn't. So I set out to fix it! Slightly morbid to be able to pick apart a B17, but it happened. I want to have individual gun positions subject to damage or destruction, and that includes the ball turret, which seems to be indestructable! (blow up a B17 on the ground, and everything is toast, big bang, scorch marks, and the ball turret will still be sitting there!) IP: Logged |

Would it be possible to make an aluminum skin for one of the B-17s someone? There may be one out there that I don't know about. Its just that I much prefer it to olive drab.------------------ =Campaign For A Mitchell= -=BAB=-Gunner IP: Logged |

Well, Hawk....Once I have what I have in place, and reliable...(must have messed up something in the DM changes, coz she was CTD'ing last night) I will pick up the torch on the real people in the plane again. I have worked out a good way of avoiding clipping for the waist gunners, and the top turret. These I can add. I just need to get a good model for the crewmen. Farmer Joe was working on one for me, but I haven't seen any posts about the forum from him. I may just go for a lowish poly body, with a rounded head. I found a great pilot skin on a FS2000 b25 which I downloaded. Then I found out it won't work in CFS....doh! With low switchin's this should be o.k. Also wanted bombs visible in the bomb-bay, so you can watch them drop. ! was going to do that for the B24 until I spotted the bulkhead positions on a cutaway....you can't see the bloody bombs! Still, stage 1 will let me know if the damage model is o.k. and if people are actually seeing what I've changed in action. Then, stage 2. With gunners in the waist, you can give the models an inertia box, and have them take damage...hmmmmm p.s. A big thank-you to Hawk.....he started this project with a post about updating the B17.......
