Spanky here...

As part of my research about ww2 RCAF squads I found this wacky cool fact.

During the ill fated Dieppe landings 400 and 414 recon squads were flying sorties over the port. 400 lost one aircraft, while an Flg Off Hollis Hills, an American member of 414 Squadron, claimed an Fw 190 shot down for the Mustang's first victory of the war.

How crazy is that.

Here is one for you, according to some info from Speed Vision's Great Aircraft of WWII they had on last weekend, the Mustang was a bear to fly until the AUX tank was emptied.

Whirlwind,

That's my understanding as well; however, I read that the plane didn't become stable until at least half the tank was emptied. Evidently the COG was whacked when the AUX tank was full.

BTW, what's Speed Vision? Is that a channel devoted to racing and the sort?

I have a reprint of the Mustang 3 pilots handbook, It advises pilots if they are carrying drop tanks to use 40 gals from the Fuselage tank before swopping to the drop tanks, if they are not carrying drop tanks they were to empty the fuselage tanks before going to main tanks. The fuselage tank is I assume the aux tank as the book says it was fitted to later aircraft.

It also states later in General Flying section 'When the fuselage tank is full the aircraft is logitudinally unstable in all condititions of flight and tends to tighten up in turns, until 40 gals of fuel are used from this tank, no manoeuvres other than gentle turns should be attempted. The addition of bombs/drop tanks lessens this condition'.

Here is some more detailed info on the development of the Mustang. Includes details of the Merlin development etc and fuel tank details including instability caused by intro of Aux Fuse fuel tank. Also has links to index which is worth checking out.
