Well guys, I finally got my ABIT BE6-II Motherboard and overclocked Celeron 566 running great at 850 MHz. So far it's very nice BUT one catch. If I install my SB AWE 32 sound card (BIG ISA card) in the ONLY ISA slot, I never fail to get a Windows Protection Error upon bootup. This system only runs without the soundcard installed.PLUS, ALL my games work EXCEPT SDOE!! Anyone have any luck with a similar setup? If I don't fix this soon I'm gonna lose my mind. IP: Logged |

Does it work at the default speed? Your ISA slot may not like being overclocked by 1 1/2 times (if our overclocking the bus that is) Alternativly, with those sound cards, even PnP ones, Ive had probs with resource conflicts, even some that don't show up in the systems box. Normally it conflicts with the Parellel port of network card, so maybe try to disable those things, or assign some IRQ's to the ISA slot or something like that. I'm no expert, I just played with stuff until it went away, still don't know what fixed my problems. IP: Logged |

Pete,Take the plunge and get a SBLIVE! value....Most PC shops will have some OEM's laying around for under 60 bucks and its worth it..big time. The SBLIVE series are all PCI cards. IP: Logged |

Spanky here... Yeah i was going to say you have a new board and chip and vid card but your still using that old pci card>? I would try it without overclocking and an SBlive. BTW I thought you were buying a p3 850 chip>? IP: Logged |

Pete, I am running the same rig without a prob other than I don't have a isa sound card installed. Keep in mind that the isa slot shares the same irq as the ajacent pci slot so if you use the isa slot you cannot use the pci slot next to it. Hope that helpsIP: Logged |

Um, yeah... what Dan said, Pete. Time for a SB live OEM card anyway. Save that ISA slot for an emergency. Couple things: Does it boot w/ sb32 card when _not_ overclocked? (noticed bryan covered this along w/ possible IRQ conflicts) Did you install the latest win9x drivers for your particular motherboard? When are you gonna tell us how many SDOE b17s you can have in the air without noticeablt slowdown?BTW, we want a FULL report when you've got it together. I'm going to do an upgrade myself pretty soon here and I'm already getting excited about it! IP: Logged |

Update...Just spent MANY hours trying to get this thing to work. A guy in the NGs mentioned that I rem out all SB info in my Autoexec.bat file. I did that and it worked... ONCE. I still have it going into Win98 and then it gives me the same error and crashes. I spent 2 hours on the phone today with the company I bought it from (800 number thank goodness) and we tried EVERYTHING. The only final thing he told me to do was wipe clean my 27 Gig HD and do a fresh install. I just spent 2 hours transferring important files to my small 6 gig HD and am about to take the plunge. Hopefully whatever is doing this will be fixed. If not, I'll flash my BIOS on my BH6 board (this new one is the BE6-II I got mostly since it's the latest, and has temperature monitors on it) and run my new CPU on it. Hopefully I won't have to though. In all this trouble one positive thing is this, I'm cleaning out all the junk that has been sitting on my drives. Wish me luck. Oh, I may go to that SB Live Dan, but since I saw my current board run on this 850 setup, I know it CAN work. Thanks for the advice though everyone. IP: Logged |

I thought you did a fresh install of the OS?If you haven't already, I'd always recommend a fresh win9x install when changing MB. Depends on who you talk to, but I'll usually install all hardware together, then fdisk, format and install OS. If your hardware doesn't get you through the installation, it's probably going to be flakey afterwards too, unless it's a driver issue. If you run into problems during installation w/ everything, take it down to the bare minimum (only vid. card), install, then when stable, get one card at a time in there- w/ correct drivers! Anyway, good luck! IP: Logged |

I strongly urge u 2 purchase one of the SB Live! series of cards, Pete. They have been out 4 about 2 yrs now, and the 32bit DSP at the heart ol al Live! cards, the EMU10K1 is still going strong, as it was way ahead of its time. Its programmability is allowing Creative 2 release more and more updates as they slowly get 2 grips with what the chip can do.EAX 3.0 is coming in the next3 months, apparently, & it will be a major upgrade. If u want excellent wave-table music AND 3D positional audio, there is none better, IMHO - especially considering the prices. Take the plunge, Pete - take the plunge!! IP: Logged |

Thanks for the info!Well, after a format and fresh install all is well now. SDOE is up and running and I'm still tweaking to see just how much I can get out of it now. What a relief (Oh, and Nascar Heat, I can run 43 cars and besides being a little choppy but not terrible with the cars all clumped together at the start, once the race gets going it's sweet!) Does that 3D positional audio cause any performance hit?IP: Logged |

Spanky here... Hawkwind, do you know the differnce between the sound blaster live value, 256 and 512? Pete I do know one thing, tail slide said after he upgraded to a live he found that his FPS didn't drop when he fired his guns. I know mine does and it hiccups the first time i fire them in a mission so i want it just for that. Also since that 3d position stuff is in hardware there should't be a performance hit. But even if there was you coud turn it off. IP: Logged |
