Well I missed it because one of my many little loved ones was in need of my attention....But apparently as the flame died down an RAAF F111C did a 'dump and burn' to symbolicaly put the flame out and carry it away.... Another F111C did a 'dump and burn' later on over the Sydney Harbour Bridge during the fireworks (saw that one !!!!!!!!!!!) Have you guys ever seen a F111 do a 'dump and burn' ? It's a sight to remember... Anyways, just thought I'd mention it so ya can catch the delayed telecast/news etc..... Cheers, AGAS 5 IP: Logged |

Yes I have seen quite a few dump & burns and at very close range too. It is an AWESOME sight to have a 'Pig' dump & burn right over your head...the tail of the flame can reach 200ft in length!! I've never seen any other aircraft do it though, only F111C's. Aussie! Aussie! Aussie! Oi! Oi! Oi!

That's right Werner. The F-111 dumps fuel out of a rear nozzle and the pilot lights the afterburners ;?) .Anyone who had seen this happen will tell u it's a SPECTACULAR sight.Unfortunately, the TV cameras couldn't do it justice because the sky was very dark meaaning the F-111 couldn't really be seen properly and the glow was so poerful that it looked a little fuzzy on the TV screen.Nevertheless, it was amazing. It's interesting 2 note that the "dump & burn" procedure has only ever been performed by Aussie RAAF 'Ardvaarks' (or 'Pigs' as they are called by the RAAF).It was forbidden by the USAF, so this most spectacular procedure was only ever demonstrated by Aussie F-111's.The 'Pig' is still the best bomber in its class - in fact, tactically & strategically speaking, it is in a class of its own - a strike a/c (which General Dynamics initially tried 2 call a fighter-bomber/strike-fighter but is actually both a tactical & strategic swing-wing bomber) IP: Logged |

The 'Pig' is still the best bomber in its class - in fact,it is literally in a class of its own - a strike a/c (which General Dynamics initially tried 2 call a fighter-bomber/strike-fighter but is actually both a tactical & strategic swing-wing bomber) which can carry up to 20,000lb+ weapon load over thousands of miles and travel at higher altitudes at speeds of Mach 2.5, whilst still being the fastest low-alt a/c in existence, able 2 use its terrain-avoidance radar 2 hug the ground at well over 1.6 times the speed of sound. It has a high wing loading making it a poor turner, (it is a bomber after all), but it is regarded as the most stable hi-speed/low-level strike platform in the world. And whilst it's truly a strike a/c, at a recent annual Red Flag exercise in Nevada, an RAAF F-111 "shot down" a USAF F-16 with a Sidewinder (it carries 2 for self-protection).That's the equivalent of a Ju-88 dogfighting and downing a Mustang ;?) . I bet that Falcon pilot was feeling mighty embarrased afterwards!Hmm. Isn't this like holding a lighter in front of an aerosol can? Doesn't the plane have to go real fast to keep the flames from creeping up the trail of fuel and into the tanks? I can totally see the "cool" factor in the dump + burn, but how does one put out a torch with a flamethrower? Werner ------------------ Visit Abbeville Field Today! IP: Logged |

Nice one Hawkwind That reminds me of the time a few years back when one our Oberon class subs 'sunk' the Enterprise...but that's another story The best dump and burn I've seen was down at the Avalon Air show a few years ago....at night with cloud cover at about 5000ft...when the pig came screaming past at about 4000ft and lit up.... the surrounding country side was lit for about 10 miles...it was just so bright and the reflection from the clouds above....magnificant Cheers, AGAS 5 IP: Logged |

In the US the EPA (Environmental Protection Agency) bureaucrats probably wouldn't allow it...too much air polution they'd say. Damn, how many SUV's would it take to burn that much fuel? IP: Logged |

CC, that wasn't that long ago, Agas - only 2-3 yrs ago, I believe.Guess what, in recent multinational naval exercises held near Hawaii (where the Oberon incident occured), one of the new, refitted Aussie Collins-class subs managed 2 evade the US carrier's escort screen (not sure which USN CV) & "sink" her, then escape thru the screen once more!!Looks like they have those cavitation probs pretty much under control now (finally). The Collins class subs can't be that noisy any more under full underwater power ;?) That reminds me of an email that went around last year when us Aussies were about to go into East Timor........amongst other things it gave reasons to the Indo president as to why we can't go to war with him... ....one of them was that our new Collins class subs were having continual structural damage to their masts from running aground on reefs.... (think about it - the subs must of been inverted ) Cheers, AGAS 5 IP: Logged |
