Well guess what......... Im more than half way done on a workable torpedo!!!!!!!!!!!! I stole jedis dam buster idea and made some improvements. It 'bounces' pretty close on the water and it travels pretty far. It detonates when it hits the ship too. (Some times it detonates right before it hits the ship. But thats a rare occasion in deep water.)Only two problems that need to be sorted out. 1. How can I make it not twirl so much once in the water? 2. When I start out in mid-air with it loaded on the Beaufighter (My test plane ) the plane starts to spin around in circles. But when I start on the ground and takeoff, all is well. Any ideas? It doesnt bounce high off the water at all. If fact, it looks like its actually ontop of the water. (I think it actually does travel ontop of the water.) Only thing is it twirls when its ontop of the water. HELP WOULD BE MUCH APPRICIATED! WE NEED A TORPEDO!!!! ------------------ -=Make sims, not hype=- Visit My Site! http://ArgonV.tripod.com/My_Page.html IP: Logged |

Argon, GREAT TO HEAR!!!!! WE REALLY DO NEED A TORPEDO!!!!!! But could you be a bit more specific about "twirl" does it spin horizontaly or vertically (like its tumbling)? I know its unlikely I could help but it may help to speed up others response. Do you think I could take a look at it? While i'm here could you send me your keyboard.inp and startup.ppf? Thanks.------------------ "Don't move, if we scatter, he'll pick us off! Stand Together!"~~Aladar 28 times to see Dinosaur and counting!! Sup Aladar! Actually, Ive done more working on it now and it doesnt "tumble" above the water hardly at all anymore! (Yes it tumbled on top of the water alot before...) Still needs some tweaking however but we are now closer to having a torpedo now than ever! Ive gotten it now where it hardly ever pops out of the water as well! (It sticks its nose out sometimes mostly now) It stays right below the surface so you can see the little splashes in the water. Procedure for droping it: Fly at about 40 feet at 200 mph level flight. Then drop. You have to get the timing down so you dont drop too close or too far away. If you drop it too far away, when it hits the ship it will be a dud cause it wasnt going fast enough. If you drop it too fast, it will sometimes pass by the ship and explode right behind it, or explode right before it reaches the ship. It takes practice (Like in real life) but I believe I have it down fairly well. I'll send it to ya right now along with my keyboad and startup files. ------------------ -=Make sims, not hype=- Visit My Site! http://ArgonV.tripod.com/My_Page.html [This message has been edited by ArgonV (edited 09-17-2000).] IP: Logged |

P.S. I forgot to mention... Make sure the ordWarhead is set to 0 and that the ordWeight is set to 2000 in the loadout.ppf file. Also make sure that the ship you are trying to sink has a hull that's under the water. The Akagi has no hull under the water, but the Yamato does for sure. There are a few other ships that have under water hulls aswell. [This message has been edited by ArgonV (edited 09-17-2000).] IP: Logged |

I'm liking this.. I'm liking this alot Great work Argon! The ships that I can say for sure that have a subsurface hull are Exeter, Akizuki, Yamato, Scharnhorst, Cargo Ship, Troop Ship, Liberty Ship, Ark Royal, Damaged Carrier, Sen Toku sub, and the stock Sub. The ones that don't can quickly and easily be updated though with a poly running the length of the ship below the surface. ~Nat~ IP: Logged |

Too bad there is no radar in this game so you could sneak up on a floatilla like they used to do in the beaufs - fly in a water level, then zoom up to 1200m, dive at the target - strafe, fire rockets or release the torpedo, and then run away.IP: Logged |

BRILLIANT!!!Btw, where can we get all those ships?? There ought to be a naval pack release or something! I had no idea all those vessels had been made. Hmm.... Time for a Normandy terrain? Werner ------------------ Visit Abbeville Field Today! IP: Logged |

I'm guessing he had the alligence set the same as the Beaufighter. I know I can rarely get that close.I love the torpedo! PR=FC= IP: Logged |

Hehehe thanks guys! Ive done some more tweaking. It now travels in pretty much a straight line AND Ive made it travel farther and still detonate when it hits the ship at low speeds. I'll continue tweaking it till it feels right, then release it so you guys can play with it and give me suggestions. It takes some practice, but I can drop the torpedo and have it hit the ship and detonate 99% of the time now. Nat, I set the Yamato as the same country as me so it would not shoot at me while Im testing, lol.------------------ -=Make sims, not hype=- Visit My Site! http://ArgonV.tripod.com/My_Page.html IP: Logged |

P.S. Im still having the problem where if you start out in mid-air with the torpedo, the plane spins around ALOT. Does anyone know why? And if this can be fixed?IP: Logged |

Nat, dont you mean me? Not Aladar? You had the same problem with the Cluster Bomb eh? (Causing the plane to twirl?) Which airfoil do I move down? Better yet, I'll send you what I have so far. IP: Logged |

Wow, that's lookin great! I need to get a copy, maybe I can get the dam buster bomb to work better...How do you keep it from detonating under the airplane and blowing yourself up? That was the big problem with the bouncing bomb. FWIW, I had the same problem (the spinning) with the dam buster. If I had the "hidden" bouncing bomb parts outside (above) the plane, it went crazy. As long as I kept the invisible parts within the confines of the fuselage, it was fine. Don't know why it worked that way tho. Sounds like an airfoil activation problem... Another possibility is the dreaded OPS pilot bug. If you're using the newest OPS, and save your plane, and also save the pilot at the same time (i.e. "save referenced files" is checked in the save dialog), the pilot figure will become corrupted, which may cause his parachute airfoil to activate. The airplane doesn't like this. Try copying in a known "good" pilot figure as a sub for the Beau pilot and see what happens. ------------------ --jedi-- IP: Logged |

Jedi, I'll send you a copy as soon as I get this thing to travel more straight. I believe I have it down, I just have to tweak the obHits so it doesnt blow up when it hits the water. Then I'll send it to ya.Hmm... your solution sounds interesting. I'll have a go at it, thanks! ------------------ -=Make sims, not hype=- Visit My Site! http://ArgonV.tripod.com/My_Page.html IP: Logged |

Jedi, from what I can tell, the hidden "charge" is in the BeauFs fuse. I also tried the pilot idea. The pilot is not corrupted so no go there either. Hmm... this has me puzzeled...IP: Logged |

Spanky, I downloaded all the Beaufighter versions 2's and deleted the version 1's. That is the Beaufighter Mk.XP.S. More torpedo news.... Ive learned that if you increase the stability of the torpedo while its going thru water, the range decreases some. If you decrease the stability, the range increases. (Some times by ALOT) Im trying to find an inbetween now. [This message has been edited by ArgonV (edited 09-18-2000).] IP: Logged |
