Anybody tried WinME retail version yet?

If not, I picked it up at school today. So I can install it tonight and see how SDOE works with it.

I've heard bad things about it, and not good things about it. If you didn't upgrade to 98, you should be ok after about a half dozen patches.

Take it from an ex tech support person, dont try to upgrade. Do a clean install you will have fewer problems....

I installed it Wednesday evening. Install went fine, no problems. SDOE runs just as before. I installed it on top of a Windows 98 upgrade of Windows 95. No problems Wednesday evening or last night. Either I'm just lucky or....god forbid....this is a good product.

Well, since I run a dual boot Win2k/Win98SE, I use w2k for everything but games. But, I dont even have time to play games anymore so the win98 side collects dust.

I figure 5 bucks isn't a bad price for the latest offering from anti-christsoft...so I may do the upgrade install and check it out. Im not sure if my System Commander partion software will recognize the new OS and you don't get any boot disks when you buy software on campus (you get a disk, and that's it). So I'm pretty sure I'll have to try the upgrade path.

Will winME boot off of the win98 startup disk? I don't see any reason why it would not.

What I've read on WinME is that it runs slower than Win98 in all test run on them. The big improvement was upgrading to IE 5.5! Something to think about. I'd post the link but I lost it.

Dan,

You should be able to boot directly off the install CD if your computer is less than a couple of years old. You'll need to go into the BIOS and set the CD to be the first boot device then just pop the CD in the drive and reboot. Make sure to set the HD back to the primary boot device in the BIOS when WinME reboots after install.

Bah, I think I'm gonna hold out for now. I don't have much free time anymore and I dont want to spend my weekend trying to fix my box.

Well, I went ahead and installed it over my win98SE. So far no probs, but only game I have tried is UT. I didnt have to reinstall any drivers or anything like that, so it was pretty smoothe.

I dont have SDOE installed right now, so not sure how it likes it. Jerry seems to not have any problems with it, so that should be a good sign.

It looks way too much like win2k and old win98SE. Bill and crew are stretching thin with this one. Hopefully it will be more stable, but I use win2k for everyting but games anyway. Its lightyears ahead of win98/ME.

Save your 50 bucks and buy Crimson Skies.

Spanky here...

Whats with all these windows versions anyways?

Whats win2k for and whats winme for?

I though they were supposed to make one os for everyone that had the best parts of win98 and nt4.

then they dropped that idea and went crazy with the cash grab.

If they don't come out with new versions, they can't keep making money. They are already getting ready for the new Office, the one after Office 2000. Who needs it?

Windows ME is the latest version of thier 'consumer' OS, which they hope all the Windows 98'ers will snap up.

Geez, Win 98 users will snap it up! I'm still on Win 95 myself. Will I go out and grab a copy of Win2000 (whatever) for nearly 1000 zl? Will SDOE run better, will it boot up faster and make me more popular with girls (popular I am already, it would border with a miracle )

Can't they just grow up and make a good Amiga OS clone and finish with this DOS overlay nonsense?! I guess they can't, bummer

OK, anything worth killing for in this new OS revision? Like new faster and even better screensaver or maybe new, improved start up sound. The one I'm using sounds really obsolete

Cheers

Don't get Win2K for games..they are much slower.

I'd get Win98SE over Win95...but you are right, they are the same mess of wicked evil with a few bug fixes here and there.

If you are happy with what you got, why upgrade.

"Gee, will a Pentium 3 processor really enhance my internet experience that much better?"

Give me a break. LOL

I Thought the two would merge also. But W2K is very security oriented and a replacement for NT. I can see where the avarage person would have problems. So I suspect $Soft cam out with ME as a way of saying: "OOPS. Thats too complex for most you..." (Yes, they like the cash too.)

They also encountered more problems than they anticipated in dropping support for 16-bit applications.

Better play swotl and aoe while you still can.

I have encountered one bug: there is an "automatic update" feature that checks the MS Update page without user intervention when you are online. With DSL I am online all the time. Everytime it checked I got an error message so I turned it off.

Spanky here..

"automatic update"

If theres one thing I hate about windows (and belive me theres more then one Its that it does stuff on its own without asking you first.

I would disable that right away, stuff like that shouldn't be enabled as a default setting, ANYTHING that does something on its own should be OFF by default.

You mean like a virus detector that tells you that you have an infected file? Or the SDOE utility that lets you know when someone is in the lobby? My McAfee notifies me automatically when there is a DAT file update.

Yeah, I hate those programs that run in the background.

Seriously, as long as you have to option to shut it off if you want it shouldn't be a big deal.

Spanky here...

Well your running those programs intentionaly NOT by default.

I think windows should come with a big warning saying this, this, that and the other thing are all running right now and this is what they do and here is how you shut them off.

Problem is it would take a lifetime to sift though the things its doing all the time.

BTW i don't run a virus scanner.

Yes as long as there is an option its ok, i just don't like update stuff running auto unless i explicity tell it to.
