According to National Geographic April 1999 the following planes were involved at Midway:

A6M Zero 106/94 lost
D3A Val 72/72 lost
B5N Kate 93/81 lost

TBF Avenger 6/5 lost
F4F Wildcat 88/26 lost
F2A Buffalo 21/13 lost
SBD Dauntless 128/48 lost
SB2U Vindicator 21/6 lost
TBD Devestator 44/40 lost
PBY Catalina 31/1 lost
B-26 Marauder 4/2 lost
B-17 Flying Fortress 17/2 lost

It looks like we have a good portion of these planes either finished or in the making. Can someone put a percent completed on this list? Thanks...

Experienced pilots who dove away instead of dogfighting.

One of the big problems with the Buffalos at Midway was the inexperienced pilots they had stationed there at the time. I remember one account where the flight leader's wingman was something like three hours out of training.

Apparently, the Buffalo wasn't as bad as its reputation warrants. It was in the ballpark with the Wildcat. Both were horribly out-matched by a well-flown Zero. But a smart American pilot could be effective in them, if he was careful about picking his fights.

The name of the pilot in the only surviving Avenger was Ens. A.K. Earnest from VT-8, and his planes code numbers were 8-T-1. (Brag brag brag )
