Sorry for being so sarcastic but it sounds like the old "Our Gang" comedies - boy does that age me! The neighborhood kids get together and say "Hey, let's put on a play". A couple hours later they have a stage, costumes, a script and rehearsed actors putting on a play. It's not real world - enthusiasm wains and infighting takes care of the rest. Building planes is one thing, but a whole sim?

I disagree with TwinHit's notion that SDOE is just a modeler's hobby sim, who would want to create/edit aircraft that are not fun to fly in a game/combat spirit? True you can create this art, but the true goal is what holds the attention and keeps this community going strong. And the goal is gaming/flying on-line - immersing yourself in air combat from any era in a way no other current sim can match.

After seeing the two examples of user built sims I take back every bad thing I ever had to say about game developers.

SABRE - GPL combat flight simulator features Sabre, Mustang and Yak-9 aircraft http://sabre.cobite.com/

Flight Gear Flight Simulator - a large, collaborative effort to produce an open source flight simulator http://www.flightgear.org

Seriously we do owe alot to guys that make the things we play with. I really think it is our own fault that they are so buggy.

1. We are cheap we think $50 is a lot of money.

2. We are a small community maybe what 50,000 serious AC simmers world wide.

3. We demand ever more detail and realism and bitch when the framerates fall off.

4. Refuse to pay to play, which could get a small company the resources it needs to develop a great sim.

5. We buy first bitch later instead of carefully reviewing what is available.

6. We have never set up a network that builds a consensus of what we want from developers.

7. The masses are largely excluded by are search and demand for the hardcore flight sim.

8. Etc. Etc.

The answer is to pay more and try and get the developers out of the hands of the big game publishing companies by preordering sims directly from the developers. I know this is unrealistic but hey I'm amusing myself.

I have no problem with pay to play but not if i need to pay for the software up front.

$10 - $15 per month is fine by me, maybe even $20
