Yep, it's a bastardised Akagi.....and it's an airfield.... tried to put the original texture on her, but had problems with texture flags. As a side issue, the sea has become solid....don't know how that happened.... Have some problems with size...( no sniggering at the back )...since the ship has been made 3 times larger. The AI needs space to park extra planes if you fly more than one off. You also have to make sure it's using the right runway.... It's compromise time again, but worth it to give the Axis a meaningful airfield object. Better that than an uncharted island..... Well, you tell me!!!!! Had to do some more fiddling with the island for Midway proper: The island had to be raised some, above where 'd lowered it to in the name of realism... the zeros would take off all right, turn onto the waypoint heading, and lose some height.....they had very little to start with.....splash. Raising it up some allows them to fly off properly. Thats it for tonight.....I need a drink! IP: Logged |

Kewl wakeup! When you get the airfields on Midway sorted out, will you release two packs? One with the workable airfield and one with the workable airfield and carrier? I go for realism so I wouldnt like the 3-times larger Akagi. Maybe when someone figures out how to scale it down to its right size... But its kewl you got it semi-working! A step(s) in the right direction.IP: Logged |

The scaling was deliberate. If you have it normal sized, there are serious problems for the AI if you fly more than one plane off. They need space to form up, turn onto the runway and go. It may be possible, if I can figure the runway properties and the obFormation bits, that I can queue the planes where I want. Then Akagi can be the right size. Pack wise, the only things that are modified are the SM files. This would make for fairly small downloads anyway. You just add them to the exisitng Midway terrain, and slap in the new airfields. As I learn more, this should get better. It is still relatively new territory. Two weeks ago, I didn't even think this could be done.... [This message has been edited by wakeup tailgunner (edited 08-30-2000).] IP: Logged |

Hey TG, gettin there huh Question though.. which airfield have you moded to fit the Akagi? Was just asking cause there are some much "thinner" runways available that might allow you to cut down on the size more, Eastborne for instance only has 1 runway and the form up strip is right next to it and parallel. Just a thought and you might have used one of the small strips anway.~Nat~ IP: Logged |

Probably a dumb question as I'm OPS challenged but, can you give the akagi an island shape and skin?IP: Logged |

This is getting real good real quick! As far as the airfield elevation goes...is it the AI planes that cant keep themselves in the air? I'm asking because maybe the waypoint where the turn is made is much too close to the end of the runway and that could be the reason for the loss in elevation. Did you try out your theory on the sunken airfield for the PBY? IP: Logged |

Hey, thanks for the Eastbourne tip, the airfield I was using was nicked from somewhere in Rhineland....The AI problem seemed to be hit and miss, depending on the turn. I was having them turn out over the lagoon, but not that sharply. The AI was a bit fussy, and for the sake of a few feet of Island, it seemed better to give it all the help I could... I tried the sunken airfield theory, and no go. The sim ignores anything under the surface and just kicks you into an air start. I got some messy compromises with the runway at zero feet, but it looked horrible, and wouldn't make splashing wakes. The only other thing I can think of would be to put an object over the runway with a material of water. Add it in as a group object like the hangars, and use something like a lagoon coral edge to hide the join. This might work, I'll try it if I get a minute. Along with midway airfields, this is top of my GottaHavIt list.....

TG.. little steps my friend get the one problem done, leave the other as a side project for if you lose patience or get annoyed with the other You're doing great work ~Nat~ IP: Logged |

Well, cracked one little problem now. Have gained the understanding of the fromation locations, and have re-jigged them. This allows for a substantially smaller airfield for Akagi Field. The AI still likes it, and i have had 3 planes waiting takeoff and moving into position etc.The deck area is still a little larger than it should be, but to go any smaller would involve further AI problems. Having some issues texturing the deck portion. It seems reluctant to give up it's super texture reference. Still, trying to move the control tower to look like the island....If that goes well, I will re-model it to look right. I want to keep a control tower view.Should be cool... Anyway, off on holiday for a week as of Saturday, and I think the break will do me good. The isand is 90% sorted, and the carrier is coming together nicely. There are a few issues I can't seem to crack, and a break should give me a fresh view of things. Watch this space.... IP: Logged |
