I would like to add the city to the new Singapore map but, it looks just okay at about 5k and up. Down low it looks muddy. I'd like to know if the city and or other towns should be added or just left as jungle and rice paddies. Check out the top picture at this site and let me know what you think or suggest. Be warned the pix are big to show what you'd see in game.

How possible would it be to add a bunch of buildings that are each just big cubes, that switch in once you get low enough? Maybe that's too big of a framerate hit, but it sure would be sweet to have a real city down there :-)

Adding actual buildings and such are not a problem; its the quantity. If the city is added I'm sure Nat or TailGunner will add them in!
Nat,
Thanks Bro!

You asked for opinions... here's mine. I'm thinking this map likely won't have the half-dozen or so small towns like the other maps, so why not go hog wild and do a good job simulating the city? Complete with warehouses, buildings, houses... just keep the 3d models simple but the graphical quality good. Oh, and please don't go 50/50 and have some buildings and some flat terrain. IMO that looks like absolute crap.

Great job guys! you guys rock!!

I agree. Just make sure you put some railyards down by the docks. I know, we havent got any trains. 2 points....
1) Railyards were themselves targets as that cut off the flow of goods and material.
2) If we have railyards (and maybe some lenght of track that goes into a tunnel...) Someone will build a train. (Heck they already have, but no tracks in the current terrains...)

So you guys are saying you want the city!

Werner- I agree that 50/50 looks bad too! There are two other major towns plus a British Naval base to the North and this island isnt very large. How would all these affect FPS? We can try it of course and see how bad it is.

Snickers- I'm planning on at the very least texturing the rails. Maybe Pete would like to revive that train idea.

Being a Train buff and WWII buff this idea sounds tantalizing. How about having a number of static box cars on sidings, but then having one train complete with engine that moves back and forth slowly on a linear DOF (or something like that) overtop of a straight piece of track? You could even include it in the rail yard's sm so it's a part of the terrain, and not placable (since placing would be extremely difficult). One request though, please make sure the box cars look right, not like the huge superboxes used on North American rail systems these days. I'll lend a hand painting the cars if you want, too.

Ah, heaven is when your hobbies all merge into one!

ok, I'll build a city, it wont be to hard I think, infact, shouldn't be hard at all if I do it the easy way instead of the SDOE way. There is going to be other small towns etc over the rest of the terrain though, not many, but since this terrain is going to be built from Rhineland more than likely, I'm going to be able to keep some of whats on there, some of the airfields will be left where they fall in or close to the right places, and with TG's new research he'll be able to put others in the right places for us, and also maybe other towns, POW camps etc, so if all goes to plane this will be a full terrain s you'd expect to see from SDOE, only obviously better cause lets face it, have you seen texturing that good anyplace else? I think not

As it goes now I'm thinking of it, I can place any buildings anywhere on the map really, so that should add to the overall effect, but for the first step, Singapore will be built, it may not be correct in such and such a street should be here with this big building on it and so on, but it will be a large city/town

Small request if you have time.. can you include the Raffles hotel? Birthplace of the "singapore sling" and stopover for the AVG on their way to Burma if I remember right.

A city is simple enough, if you build it from a set of standard buildings. Add in a few showcase blocks, and there you go. Airfields reference the same model to place multiple hangars etc. You just give it a position and a model ref and away you go. Thats why the files are so small.....most of it lives elsewhere!

When I say simple...

Nat,
Let me know when you need a working Supertif. I've got a few days off coming and I'd like to give the island a good working over. The layout of the city is pretty close.
