Oooooohhmygaaawwwd no forum for 2 whole days...
Still it's back from wherever it's been...

Two steps forward, one step back for the airfield. Been taking up all my time...

Here's where were hitting snags:

1) The airfield I'm grafting in came from Rhineland. It's mapped to a rhineland/airfields/textures/airfield1Super

This texture itself doesn't exist in the parfiels, but it's components do. Re-mapping the textures has proved tricky since by changing the shape of the airfield Lod's the runways don't line up with the texture.
Help needed from the Terrain Guru's!!

2) The runways need to be cut down to one for an aircraft carrier 'airfield'. The data seems to be in the airfield .sm but I really can't work out the co-ordinates system or directional parts of the data. I had a few stabs by trial and error, but since I didn't understand what I was changing, the results told me nothing...... anyone no how this bit works?

3) Can't get rid of those bloody trees and still have a working .SM file!!!!!!!! OPS won't do it coz of those grouping problems...oh well, hack the OL file again and see if it works.

On the plus side, the following HAS worked:

The position of the airfield has been pinned down into the correct location on the lagoon tile. No problem there. The tile itself has been flattened to remove the watery bulge that was Midway Island. Built a rough Island shaped lump out of the airfield tiles, but the textures go a little odd when you distort the tiles. Still, it sits nicely on the water, extending under it a little. This should make jetty / quays / harbour constructions possible. I wonder what would happen if I were to make the airfield tiles sit just under the water, but fill the whole tile........

Hey TG, I aint sure how much help I can be here, it's the airfields that really stumped me, I just could work out what told the aircraft which direction the runway was.. I got some way to working out how the positioning worked, 50% of what you got really, but on the texturing side, take a look at how I did Snowy Dover, it's not hard really, you need a new directory for the airfield textures, rework them and put them all in there, identical to how they are with the original airfield, change the texture refs in the SM file and bobs yer uncle, but looking at Snowy Dover will explain it better than I can, but since the inner workings of sm files is still rather misty to me I can't tell you much

PS. does this mean I can recruit you for future Singapore work??

WUTG,
I can retexture the airfield if you'd like. The detail gets lost and blurred unless it has its own mapping. Send me what you have and what you'd like accomplished. Also, what is the elevation of your new island? My info shows it at around 10 ft at its highest point and flat as hell.
Nat,
I think we finally found us a volunteer! Hope this doesnt scare him away from Singapore.

Well, updating my own update.....

STOP PRESS:

The trees have gone!

Cracked the texture thing, but thanks for the tips anyway....
The texture flags on the super texture are different....when you try and map on your own textures, if you don't change the flags, it thinks they're alpha textures....scarlet Midway looked well odd!!!!

It currently only has a single texture streched across it, so it looks crap. I need to chop up my island into about 9 chunks and map a 256 x 256 texture onto each. Thats how the original airfields were.....

Did my homework on midway, and I've made it flat on top, just big enough for the runways. Won't mess with them until I know what the numbers mean! The island is not too high, but adjusting the height is easy. I wanted it to blens in with the sea, so it slopes gently away on all sides. It looks a little blocky still, but then the texture hasn't been done properly, so I'm not worried yet.

50% there, and looking good so far.......

P.S. If you want help with anything for Singapore count me in. Glad to give something back to the community!

This is all VERY exciting news! Im really happy you are doing this. It brings tears to my eyes. Midway is soooo much closer to being complete (YYYYEEESSS!!!!) How will the smaller islands be done? Are they going to be actuall land as well as the main island with the airfield?

P.S. Cant wait for awesome Pacific battles!

Argon, the problem I've had with the land is that the tile is water material, so that automaticaly make the land I build water aswell, there are 2 options though, one if to add a new island object to the terrain that was take from a land material so the values are right, the other (beter) way is to find out how to change the faces if the island to Land material, Tail said it can be done in Max and tried to explain it, but I never got it to work.

Btw, the smaller island is the one with the airfield on it, I think today they have one on both islands, but I think I'm right in saying that during the war there was only onne on the small one.

TG, cool, I think there will certainly be enough work to share out with Singapore, especially if my problms with Max carry on they way they are going.

Nat...

You are correct, sir!! The small island did have the only runway in WWII...and now- that island is a wildlife preserve (gotta save those gooney birds!) and the bigger island now sports the present day airfield. A great book on the battle of Midway and on the Yorktown is "Return to Midway" by Robert Ballard (the guy who found the Titanic)...on page 11 there is a pic of the present day Midway islands.

Brought to you by the campaign for a better Dauntless!
