I've been thinking about how the DM in SDOE is great, but wouldnt it be cool if we could have wings with three or four sections?
Basically what I've thought is that couldn't someone make a set of aircraft for offline use (or online...) that have very advance damage modeling? I realize that this may turn them into Framerate hogs, but I'd much rather have a few very realistic planes in a mission than a bunch of unrealistic ones....

I'd do it myself, but have no idea how to...
Could it all be done in OPS?
This is really something I think would add to the game...

IRG, I don't think this would be a FR hog to be honest, and in a small way it's been added to the WW1 aircraft already, on some of the the wing tips can be blown off, I'm seriously considering doing just what you said with the A10 and adding extra damage effects that I know I can do already, so hopefully the A10 will take alot of damge as it should and still fly, but you'll see she's beat up, also thanks to the bullet effects now the damage on new aircraft should look very cool

That would add 2 airfoils per wing subdivision (1 per wing). That will cause a bigger load on the CPU.

you could probably get the effect you want with multiple damage LOD's revelaed on differing damage levels. It wouldn't mess with the aerofoils, and you could swap them in with obModel. Swap in wing 1 at damage 2, wing 2 at damage 3 etc.

Should be OK, so long as you don't take it to excess, and be moreframerate friendly than putting more wing sections in.

are you sure Whirlwind? I didn't think the shape of the wing affected anything, only the property information you give to it, that being the case the areas that can be detached due to damage don't need airfoils, just the same detach properties as say a wheel

If you add wing sections to the plane, usually you add an airfoil to it. It would look odd seeing a plane with 2/3rds of a wing missing flapping along like it was fresh from the factory .

You don't have to add wing sections, You could show damage to any part of the wing, just use multiple obModel replacements, you could put a hole in the middle of a wing then take a big chunck out of the end of it too, just swap in different models, The biggest problem is that you use more polys to make a hole this would hurt FR some, also each new model would probably use a new texture (You don't have to, but it would look better) this takes up video memory.

It is possible, Check out the DVII, on dmglvl 1 we swap out the texture only, but on dmglvl 2 we swap out the wing with one that has a hole in it and a tip missing.

The only thing stoping us from doing more is the FR. A lot of this can be overcome with a good use of the lod switch-in distance.

The original posts theorizes the wings having 3-4 sections each.

Trust Raider or this, he's the guru. Both he and I have some cool stuff going on, both visually and FM wise (after damage, that is.) Be patient, though. These things are time consuming. I think I average 5-10 minutes per bullet hole, and for more elaborate visuals I need assistance of good 3D modelers (JT, still have time for banging up the P47???)

The main wing on the PBY is split into 5 sectons. Frame rates are almost identical to the JU88.... FWIW...
