Oh yes, it's an airfield and it works!
It doesn't fit the terrain yet, but hey!

If that worked, you should see me flying a P47 over Midway airfield!

Now all I need is to get the positions sorted, and design an 'airfield plug' and it's sorted..

Want to make a carrier shaped airfield or two....

You SOB! Howd you do that? Nat will be pissing in his pants. This also means you can make the islands REAL land too right?

It looks like something I had suggested a long time ago - just insert an airfield.sm from one of the other terrains and adjust the texture to fit the terrain you are putting it on.

It's absolutely so simple, I can't believe I didn't think to try it before.

All I did was break it down with OL7, add in a complete set of referenced groups pasted in from another terrain, re-jig the group numbers and rebuild the SM.

Built a quick mission with an airfield start, fired her up and bingo!

The file references a model called airfield1plug, which I presume is the terrain chunk it sits on, which presumably sits over the terrain. This explains why some recent posts have mentioned texture colour differences with towns etc. They all work the same way. If the plug is textured seperately from the terrain......

So, all we need to do now is to change the OL file to point to a new plug model, shaped like midway, change the LOD references in the file so the airfield sits in a new location, and we have a fully functional midway island airstrip.

Going to try making the plug into a tile with a ship in it. May have to leave that one to Nat to deal with, not too sure about the material business that makes sea sea....

Still, got to learn it sometime....

WT,

For what it's worth, can you make all the midway water actually be solid land and just paint it blue and make it flat? This would allow us to at ditch in the "water", although somewhat unrealistically, without blowing up.

Condor out

NO! That would be a VERY bad Idea. I like the water to be actuall water. That way... ships can sink and so will aircraft and there wont be scortch marks on the water. I just want the islands to be actuall land. Hope thats done some day soon.

Hey TG, now you're at where I got to with airfields.. LOL, getting them in there wasn't the problem, but putting them where you want them always was, I really hope you manage to work it out cuse it's one of the last 2 things needed to making terrains fully operational

Have fun with it.. it's lots of good stuff

Very cool! Now can't you just paint up the tiles that are being used there, to be like shoreline and so forth? It "seems" like it'd be easy to do.
