I upgraded to win98..but sdoe won't load. I reinstalled...and it runs the opening movie ok, but screen goes black with just the pointer showing. Won't get beyond that. I have to control alt delete and unload each of the running programs...but it still won't let me reboot...I have to hit the button. Ran fine under win95.IP: Logged |

It runs fine on my two computers at home and the work computer. They all have Win98

I have run SDOE on my pc with win98 for a long time now with no problems. Try to install it in 'safe' mode: 1. place a blank floppy disk in 2. restart the computer 3. when the computer tries to restart it will tell you "non-system disk error" 4. remove the floppy and hit the F8 key twice 5. from the menu select 'safe' mode and hit enter 6. a message will tell you that you are running in 'safe' mode - select OK 7. load SDOE as usual and them restart your computer.hope this helps ... weasel IP: Logged |

sounds more like Graphics Driver problem or maybe Direct X, try updating your drivers, or even use Win95 drivers instead of 98, win 98 drivers aren't always the best, look for ones from the maufacturerIP: Logged |

Also try reinstalling direct x. at least 6, 7a if you wish. Also, delete the Cache files in your media folder and try again. You may need to reinstall the game. There are some new features which may be causing trouble with the old registry settings. Upgrading is never the preferred way to install OS's. The best way is to just blow it all away and install from fresh with a new os. As a not for installing with the upgrade version of 98, it will do a fresh install, it just asks for the 95 CD to verify that you are actually "upgrading". then it installs a full version of 98 nice and clean onto your system. You know...I think you hit the nail on the head! I had some other problems with my hp printer after I installed win98...and had to get a driver from the net. I'll bet that's it. Thanks! quote: Originally posted by Nat: sounds more like Graphics Driver problem or maybe Direct X, try updating your drivers, or even use Win95 drivers instead of 98, win 98 drivers aren't always the best, look for ones from the maufacturer

Where is "direct x"? Is a copy of it on my Creative Labs Graphic Blaster RIVA-TNT cd?Actually...the way you describe is the way I installed win98. Blew everything away and installed from scratch with the full version. What a pain. I did reinstall the riva tnt / Creative Labs software...but it still hung on a black screen and pointer. I think a problem may lie in the monitor selection. I have a Digital Research model FR-PCXCV-RA. The setup software lists FR-PCXCV-A...but not "RA". I clicked on that...and it said it wouldn't work with that monitor. I'll uninstall and reinstall other Digital monitors and see what happens. I know it works with this monitor...as it did under win95. quote: Originally posted by Mirthain: Also try reinstalling direct x. at least 6, 7a if you wish.
