Ok, so you are thinking "So what!" He only changed Nat's little Stuka Refuel right? Well, that marshaller is not only waving his arms forward and back, he's walking backwards (not leg movement yet but I could), and the Stuka is traveling too at a nice slow pace (to simulate being towed, or here, pushed by one strong guy!)
I've been experimenting with adding DOFs to airfield SMs, and with the latest beta patch it works! So in essence we can liven up these airfields with things moving around. I haven't gotten a vehicle to move yet that has the ability to fire on you because I don't think it's possible. But at least this way I'm not attaching an object to itself and then moving the second one. Here, the actual object is made a child of something in the airfield SM file. In this case it's Abbeville Field, Dover. I made the GroundMan and the Stuka scene children of the Bridge that is in the SM file for the airfield. I then set a root level command to start all the objects moving upon entering the mission. I was amazed when it actually worked!
So here are the pros, and then the cons.
Pros...
Moving objects, whatever you want, with DOF'd parts (ie my guy waving his arms) and transversing the terrain.
Airfields would be much better with one or 2 things "happening" when you got there.
Airfield SM files are small. This one was only 100k.
Objects are added directly to the airfield SM itself, pasted in and then positioned. Lastly DOFs are made for the movement. Not too painful but it is time consuming as is all OP.
Cons...
Objects still sink and or fly when moving. They don't hug the ground (terrain follow).
You can't get points for kills (maybe someone can figure this out, to make it work).
It is still only a hack. Although a potentially very neat one.
It was so cool to go into a mission I made and there goes the Stuka, leisurely by with a guy marshalling it. It adds a lot!
This is an entire new area for this game and given some time and effort, we could have a new "airfield pack" to download so everyone got the same files, and all could enjoy this very cool new aspect of this game.
I'm not at all through tinkering with this stuff. I'll get something worked up in the next couple days and post it so you all can see what I mean.
