Ok, so you are thinking "So what!" He only changed Nat's little Stuka Refuel right? Well, that marshaller is not only waving his arms forward and back, he's walking backwards (not leg movement yet but I could), and the Stuka is traveling too at a nice slow pace (to simulate being towed, or here, pushed by one strong guy!)

I've been experimenting with adding DOFs to airfield SMs, and with the latest beta patch it works! So in essence we can liven up these airfields with things moving around. I haven't gotten a vehicle to move yet that has the ability to fire on you because I don't think it's possible. But at least this way I'm not attaching an object to itself and then moving the second one. Here, the actual object is made a child of something in the airfield SM file. In this case it's Abbeville Field, Dover. I made the GroundMan and the Stuka scene children of the Bridge that is in the SM file for the airfield. I then set a root level command to start all the objects moving upon entering the mission. I was amazed when it actually worked!

So here are the pros, and then the cons.

Pros...
Moving objects, whatever you want, with DOF'd parts (ie my guy waving his arms) and transversing the terrain.

Airfields would be much better with one or 2 things "happening" when you got there.

Airfield SM files are small. This one was only 100k.

Objects are added directly to the airfield SM itself, pasted in and then positioned. Lastly DOFs are made for the movement. Not too painful but it is time consuming as is all OP.

Cons...
Objects still sink and or fly when moving. They don't hug the ground (terrain follow).

You can't get points for kills (maybe someone can figure this out, to make it work).

It is still only a hack. Although a potentially very neat one.

It was so cool to go into a mission I made and there goes the Stuka, leisurely by with a guy marshalling it. It adds a lot!

This is an entire new area for this game and given some time and effort, we could have a new "airfield pack" to download so everyone got the same files, and all could enjoy this very cool new aspect of this game.

I'm not at all through tinkering with this stuff. I'll get something worked up in the next couple days and post it so you all can see what I mean.

One more thing, I also added some moving things to a control tower SM just as a test, and it to worked. So we could even putting rotating radars on Tower, signs on buildings that spin, you name it!

Think of all the possibilities to liven up the landscape.

Oops, with the addition of the objects that airfield file is now 427k. It doesn't slow down the loading of the game at all though.

This could be the start of something!

Planes in hangars running engine tests,
Fuel trucks,
Anything that can run in a loop eithout clipping could be done.

Jolly Good Show!

Pete, you are the inovator! I tried adding the Pelecanus (flying bird) in flocks for circling airfields but took a big frame rate hit. If we could simplify the bird and get 10 or more flying around airports could get interesting.

Pete, to get points for destroying them, add obUpdateScore 100 (or whatever value you want)to the aircraft or whatever you want, that should work fine

I love your little lateral thinking projects always pushing at the little things that could be better.. cool man

Thanks all. Yeah it does make things intersting. Hawk, I think adding birds would be cool but 10 is a pretty high number I think. I think even having 5 would still be really neat. I could do up just a simple rectangle (a whopping 4 polys, 2 each side) that has a profile pic of a pelican mapped on it, with the flapping wings on it and see how that'd work, at least as a test bed.

Seriously, we could have an entirely new project of just adding and spicing up the airfields. I like the idea of an engine test also. Now if we could add SOUNDS to all this stuff that'd be killer.

Before I get into the bird idea, besides the engine run idea (it'd kinda suck without a WAV sound to go with it), what else would you like to see?

Spanky here...

Waves on the shoreline man, And you don't need sound for that.

On another thought I wonder if we could add some telephone and power lines and cables to roads, towns and airstrips to add some more scenery?

That shouldn't be too bad on FPS

Spanky here...

What about some of the animals running around?

Imagine diving low over a herd of something and having them run away from the noise.

Not possible right now but very cool.

Maybe some moving ships on the water that have nothing to do with the mission just for some fun. plus you know the alt of the water on the whole map so theres no worry about hills like iwth land dofs.

I've got a wav file of a Bf109 engine run up, lasts about 50 secs, engine is ticking over at start, is run up to full bore and then returns to tick over, in stereo of course and about 9 megs gulp. Haven't had a use for it till now LOL.
