I just messed with my Keyboard.inp file and have found that for whatever DOF you want to control, if you want it to run while your main guns fire you'd put this for the button to press...

cmdAvengerCannon = Bounce JoystickButton1

The cmd would be whatever DOF you wanted to run. So for a "mock" A-10, pressing the fire button would spin the 30MM Avenger gatling gun! I NEVER new this and never even thought to look into it, but now that I know it works this opens up new possibilities

Ok, I whipped up a Gatling gun to test on the Harrier. It starts spinning as you pull the trigger. Only problem is that I had to use a LOOPING command so the thing would spin further than 360s. So once it starts it won't stop. Now to come up with a way to make it stop (or at least appear to). May have to do some Hidden object in here. Any ideas?

well, it's not really new. Razor747 had found this months ago and we had it setup to make the guns in the zero shack when you pulled the trigger. It was just Zero's we flew online since they wasn't online compatible anymore and we touched up the guns to be bigger. It really adds something to the zero, but i'm not sure mposis will add it anytime soon.

I tried to do this for the WW I lewis gun. Had the same problem, drum would not stop spinning, I tried to have it rotate 10 degrees then return very fast to look like it was rotating but it would rotate 10 degrees when the trigger was pulled and stay there, only to return when the trigger was released.

I wonder if this would work if the command for the dof was not set to "bounce" JoystickButton1

Good luck Pete, if you get this to work we have a lot of updating to do

Actually, you can assign multiple DOFs to the same key command. You could create, for example, a tailhook DOF and give it the command "G" and the tailhook would extend simultaneously with the gear.

So to run a Lewis canister or a gatling cannon, all you'd need to do is give the DOF its own command, i.e. 'cmdGunSpin or something, and then assign that cmd to the same key as the gun firing.

I think

Jedi,

I already did that and you are right, it works. It's just a problem getting the gun barrel to stop spinning after it starts. It's very neat though that all this is possible. I say all new planes coming out would be extra cool with shaking and/or recoiling guns, spinning guns (in the case of my test Gatling gun), and man, I'm just thinking of ALL the cool possibilities. There are many!

Well, with trying to hide a copy of the gun as a child and have it spin, then disappear when done firing just isn't working out the way I'd hoped. The best I could do is have the thing spin 359 degs in .4 seconds while recoiling (looks really neat), but then it reverses back to zero. If you don't reverse when it gets to 359 it won't spin for your next burst. But even though, it's still a fun new toy to see in the game. I may include it on the Harrier although it is unrealistic for that plane. At least for recoil OP is awesome and works great! I used a very small DOF of .1 seconds and a max traverse range of .1 and it seems perfect for it.

My next big thing I'd LOVE to see is realistic smoke blasting out of the engine nozzles, and also have it follow them at their different angles. Only problem with this is that SDOE (as far as I know) won't animate textures. If it could, I'd make an an exhaust shape triangle, put an alpha texture on it of smoke and have it move (animated texture) and the entire thing follows nozzle angles. But without having animated TIFs to work with it seems pretty hard to make convincing right now. The current smoke in the game doesn't seem effected by wind, and I mean the kind of thrust coming from an engine. If it could be blown by an engines thrust of air I'd be set!

Oh well, I hope this get's put in a future patch.

The AV8B Harrier II used by the Marine Corps uses a GAU12 Equilizer 25mm Gatling. So its not that unrealistic

That thing uses 25mm ammo for the M242 25mm chain gun in the M2/M3 Bradley.

Anyone have a recoiling/vibrating/spinning gun prototype? I'd like to play with em a bit to see what I can come up with

Someone could make a M-163 AAA rig. It is a M-113 with the 20MM Gatling in a power turret. The model for the 113 is a joke, make a box, slant the front end. Steal the lower part of the Tiger 2 model. Make a turret (The hard part). Your done. ;}
Would be interesting to have AAA that shoots REALLY fast... heheheeh Would look cool too.

Sounds cool guys.

Just another quick neato thing with the Kestrel. I setup a mission with two of them (to test all my new landing gear springs, breaking them and so on). I decided to pitch the trim nose down and then bailout while flying around 20 knots in a large circle. After I got out the plane pitched up a bit due to the weight of the pilot being gone and it just started flying around on it's own via gravity... pulling it here and there. It would touch down now and then but then would take off again like a "loose cannon." I decided to take up the parked Kestrel and follow it around similar to that "kill the Learjet mission before that runaway plane kills someone." Let me just say it was a blast! It was very unpredictable and lots of fun. As soon as I release this next version you all can try it. With the balance being very good now it works great for this.
