Sure you can do it - and it's pretty much required to do any type of serious air combat maneuvers with a wingman. One of the problems is that you only have a limited field of view in sims. Here's a quick tip. Make up a mission in which an AI plane just flys straight across the map, then turns around - and repeats a few times.
Now, fly up to the plane from behind - say, at your 1 to 2 o'clock. Now, find a reference point on your view - like a crossbar on the windshield, and keep the other plane in the *same position* with respect to this reference point.
Now, come closer to the plane, keeping it in the same position. As you get closer, the other plane gets bigger. Keep approaching until you are at the desired distance. Now,
keep the other plane at the same distance by watching the plane's size - too big, and you got too close, too small, and you moved away. Keep it at a "constant size".
If you can keep the other plane in the same position on your windscreen, and at the same size, then you are flying formation.
Once you can do this manually, try it with the padlock view. Padlock makes flying a wedge or line abreast formation easier.
