http://members.xoom.com/hawkersop/SMs Here's an alpha release of the Hawker Kestrel I've been working on the past couple weeks in my spare time. Read the Harrier.txt file for important info. There are MANY things yet to do on it so it's mostly for the guys who are very eager to try it. I highly suggest all of you who read this post, download it and give it a go. It's really fun. Enjoy! More updates to follow. Pete

For those of you with the F86F by Zurawski, this zip extracts the Dials.tif to the F86F folder so you may want to back up your original dials.tif in the sdoe\media\aircraft\f86f\textures\dials folder. A big thanks to Razer747 for helping me with the original F15C Harrier test plane. If not for his help this project would have never gotten off the ground. If anyone wants it, I have a modified F84 cockpit that's already set up for the Kestrel. I need to tweak the forward fuselage some more for a perfect fit, but it makes it neat. Thanks Z! IP: Logged |

My pleasure Pete! Anything that saves a few hairs from falling out ... go for it. (Lord knows I've lost a needed few doing the F-86) IP: Logged |

Just carefully do everything I wrote in the readme. There are some things you need to put in your keyboard.inp file.Let me know if you need more help. One important note also, I balanced this jet using 800 for fuel-load in the mission editor. If you use another number it may be severely unbalanced. If that's the case and you think it's been sucking wind, use 800 It'll give you around a 15 minute flight before the tanks go dry. Makes it more challenging. How I get "near" vertical takeoffs. I use 100% flaps, don't have any wind in a mission, use 800 for fuel load. I add power and usually end up pushing full forward on the stick and try to get a small amount of forward speed and then add about 20 clicks of DOWN trim.Works for me. But try no flap take offs as well. IP: Logged |

Zool, did you make missions for it? The Harrier has NO missions in the zip. You will get a CTD if there are no missions to load.IP: Logged |

Sorry about that Zool. You do need to create a mission with it and remember use 800 for fuel load. This gives it the proper balance.IP: Logged |

Hehehe, no problem. Oh Pete, I opened up the sm in OPS and you know what? The thing only weighs 7000 lbs! LoL I tried to screw around with that, but I couldnt get the engine horse power and rpm to do just right so I said screw it. I should tell you this however, give some phyLBS to the wheels so the back two center wheels still roll on the ground when your nozzels are pointing down. IP: Logged |

I've tweaked that alot Argon. The reason they are kinda high is because the wingtip wheels give better steering control, mainly for the AI to handle. If the main gear is touching more than it is now it gets very squirrely and the AI can't take off (either conventional or at 75 degs). So believe me, I've tried many things myself and for now feel this is the best setup. Ah I see. That makes sense. Oh one more thing Id like to give a suggestion on. Could you add a foward fuse engine? Vertical takeoffs are a pain since the nose is heavy and has no engine to support it. I see only that 2 engines are modeled and they are around the middle area. Once agian thanks Pete! This baby has kept me up this late! IP: Logged |

Argon,I'm very glad you are enjoying it. Cool I'll see about adding another engine. I'm gonna get the rest of it finished first since I'm on a roll now. Doing the cockpit right now. Try the new sounds too if you want. IP: Logged |

If you guys want an easy way to adjust the balance, go into OpenPlane Studio and click on pilot. Then in Parts mode (that yellow wing thingy) slide him forward or back a couple clicks at a time and test the results in SDOE. IP: Logged |

Just want to mention too that in the main circle in the center is where the ADI "ball" goes. In this sim it's just a circle but it performs the same way the PE-2's gyro works, so thanks Laika for figuring that out! It looks really cool. Can't wait to get it all done and out to everyone. IP: Logged |

Here are some updates to the Kestrel. Finally got the control stick working. Added a working Nozzle gauge that coincides (query's) the engine angle. I'm going to do a similar thing with the Nozzle handle, so it'll move correctly as well. I've added a working ADI that rotates to show roll and also pitches the "pitch ladder" up and down like on modern jets. Still need to add the stationary airplane to it. I've got the panel laid out nicely now and am now bringing in the individual high res gauges and hope to have them finished within a couple more days. I've fixed the balance and made it so now you start a mission with 1000 lbs of fuel, and it flys great! Both from stand still and from a slow forward roll it looks/flys really nice now. I also have some things hidden up my sleeve that may belong in the OP breakthrough list, so long as they all work how I want them too So it's coming along well. I think I'm on week two now. The nice part is the things I've learned already will easily roll into future airplanes I do. (not just jets but WWII planes as well) IP: Logged |
