I am a newby to this great game and was wondering where I can get BF109 versions and more FW190 or whatever for single and multiplayer use?

You can get them from the plane pack 5.3b (current release, I beleive). Go to http://www.fightersquadron.com and click on the 'hosted sites' link, and the planes are off of one of them
