I've been working on this plane in the wee hours of the morning and here's what's new. It now has working (animated) nozzles that move corresponding to engine angle (and looks really cool). Right now there is zero angle (for forward flight), 75 degs, and 91.5 degs. This last one is best for hover-like flight and 75 degs is great as a transitional setting. You hit V for 90 degs and shift-V for 75 degs. One little discovery I made was when I did a landing with 75 degs set. I was going around 70 knots when I hit the runway and decided to hit V (for 90 degs). What happened was the two settings worked together to give me almost total rear thrust (a sort of thrust reverser) and hitting a short burst of full power in this mode I came to a very quick stop! So yes, this plane even has reverse! Hehe, it's really neat.

Also added a working speedbrake (working as in animated with a DOF but no airfoil property yet). The elevators are installed, DOF'd and working. Next up are the flaps and ailerons (always fun... NOT!). After that I'll spend time on the cockpit followed by Tmapping the whole thing, then a beta release.

In all seriousness, this plane is the most fun I've had to date with SDOE, for the fact that you can do the forward flight to hover transition and it really works, plus it just looks so neat flying really slow. Hover to forward flight is possible but you need about 70-100 ft of altitude so you don't slam into the ground. Again, more to come.

Awesome man! Thats too kewl how you got the thruster nossels to rotate. Now when all that jolly stuff is done, how are you going to do the historic FM? Or is that already done? I also hope you do a great job on the cockpit!

Jag,

check your email. No zip yet but for you since you are leaving I will be glad to let you try an alpha copy. Just finishing up the flight controls first. It won't have any cockpit yet (or cockpit glass cut out) but you'll still love it, being a rotorhead and all

Re: FM, since this airplane is so carefully balanced to fly, altering the FM will for sure prove interesting. I really need to take "FM 101" to learn it since I'd prefer simply modeling and doing DOF work, so for the get-go I may leave the FM as is and if someone is brave enough to improve on it they'll be more than welcome to. Tail?

I know there are those among you that think this is preposterous, doing a jet in this game. Again I say, I do this stuff because OP lets us. It's all for fun and mostly just because I get a huge kick out of seeing new things in SDOE. So for those of you who want me to hurry up and do more historical WWII planes, I understand. The Komet will get finished as will many other planes I'm itching to start on.

Crossbow, good idea! That shouldn't be too hard to do.

Thanks Rattlesnake. Once in a while OP grabs hold of me and won't let go. It's so addicting it's nuts but it's a pure joy for the most part. Last night I was about to say I give up (for that session) when getting the aileron DOF's right. They just weren't lining up. Then the LAST thing I tried did it! That gave me so much energy I had to fly around a couple more hours after I finished the flaps and ailerons.

I'm about to DOF the rudder and then I'll hook you up Jag. Re: the C-5, I still have it but ran into a snag. The rudder is very tough to get lined up right, but since I ran into this aileron problem with the Kestrel and figured out what was wrong, I can probably fix it now. It WILL get done, thanks for reminding me.

Just found out that the XV-6A Kestrel was the first airplane ever airlifted by the C-5A Galaxy in 1970. I knew there was a connection.

I never did. I had Domark's Super VGA Harrier game, but not jump jet.

I used to have Jump Jet... it rocked... it was the best terrain in a game of it's time.. no question. I used to play that for hours on end, especially the instant dogfight game. My disk's unfortunately ate themselves and I just never got around to having them replaced.

I love the idea of the Harrier in this game. I love SDOE for this reason. Where else can you simulate a British Harrier V Equador's P-51's in an imaginary scenario?

Another update. James "Razer747" Smith has my Harrier right now and is making it even better. The original "Harrier'd" F-15C that he helped me with laid the ground work for this one.

It's gonna kick butt when we are done with it! So a big thanks to James for the help

I'm gonna be adding some new parts to it that should be way cool when done. I'm gonna try and get an Alpha out tomorrow for everyone to fly, just cause it's so much fun. Then I'll finish up the rest and release another one in the coming weeks.
