Hi,

I have a bunch of questions :

1. The Spitfire had no aileron trim. Does it imply that the aileron trim will not do anything in SDOE ?

2. Bf109, same as above, except that the aileron tab could be set, but only on the ground...

3. FW190/Bf109 : where can I find cockpits such as the ones I found for the Spitfire ?

4. What is the format and size of the medals images ?

5. Is a Battle of Britain set of planes available somewhere ? I mean with He111, Do17, Bf110, Ju87...

Thank you.

Welcome to this simmers sanctuary, oh thou who asketh questions!
I have a bunch of answers:

1: All SDOE's planes have aileron and elev. trim. Arrow keys. The Spit's aileron was bent by mechanics on the ground in order to trim the a/c.

2: Well, yea. Figure out!

3: Aint none now. Ask Aladar, and I'll bet you have some cockpits within a week!

4: Don't remember. Somebody else will answer this for me.

5: We have some BoB planes, not all of them, tho. We have a Spit Mk.1, Hurricane, Ju-88, half a dozen of Me-109 types from e-4 to K-14. He-111 is coming soon, as is the Stuka. No Do-17 or Me-110, tho. That's a bit bad, because they were so important.
I've made a Battle of Britain campaign that you can get at www.fshangar.com in the missions section.

That's all I can think of for now.

1 & 2. Rudder can also be trimmed with Ctrl+left or right

3. There are none, but how could the 109 cockpits look any better?

4. Look up in your links about something called "Parfile Tools" and "Unbig". They allow you to extract the compressed .PAR data files. Before you ask, the Legion d'Honneur and Croix de Guerre were already created (check your email about this, I did send something to you a few days ago). If you know more than me about military history (not hard, really) then we could probably use your help.

5. A He111 is supposed to be in the works by Bryan Russel. A pic of mposis' Stuka was posted yesterday, but you'll notice it is a post BoB variant (I think).

Second session :

1. Spitfire aileron trimming : what should be the optimal setting ? Does it vary with speed, throttle and altitude (it would be an error if my readings are correct)?

2. Is convergence of guns portrayed in SDOE ? Can it be changed easily ? What are the default settings ?

3. Are emergency power (Methanol injection and the like) modelled in SDOE ? I could not find trace of it, but many features are not documented as they seem to have popped up in the patches...

4. Does "open plane" allow the introduction of gyroscopic gunsights ?

5. Is a SDOE campaign more than a series of preset missions ? Can your pilot die ? It seems that my pilot deaths just do not appear...

6. The FW190 cockpits are not on par with the "realistic" Spitfire I downloaded... Is an enhanced version in the works ? (I'll take a look at the Bf109 ASAP)

Thanks for the first replies Master semmern...

2. Yes it is portrayed to my knowladge and I have no idea if its easy to do or not.

3. Hmmm... not yet. But I hear that its possible that it could be done.

4. I dont think so.

5. Just preset missions with objectives. The pilot can die.

6. I like the Fw-190 cockpits just fine. You will find that many cockpits arent up to par with the enhanced Spit and P38 cockpits but they still look pretty darn good to me.

Yes it varies with speed and throttle (havent noticed altitude though its likely). I constantly adjust my trim until it fits my current flying conditions. Generally when I get into a fight I reset it.

It can be changed in the current state, but only by changing the aircraft model .sm file.
I realize youre new so I wont kill you with detail, but with Openplane Studio you can adjust convergence rather easily. However, the aircraft wont be compatible for online play. There is no way yet to adjust convergence while in the game.

Not yet. Aircraft are generally modelled such that their maximum power in SDOE matches WEP in real life. Engine burnout is nonexistant so far though.

Im assuming you mean lead calculating gunsights? This should be possible, though it would be a lot of work. The gunsight reticle could (in theory) be set up to act as an instrument for turn rate. Ive never tried it though.

SDOE's campaign is just a series of preset missions. SDOE's strength lies more in its online play than in campaigns, IMO.

The reason the spitfire cockpit was enhanced was because it was a separate model apart from the aircraft, and thus it could be modified without causing conflicts in online play. The 190 cockpits are a part of the aircraft, so changing them would cause incompatibilities. I suppose, if you or anyone else feels like making a better 190 cockpit, give it a shot and if people like it it will make it into the next plane pack.

Great reply Falck!

Just to add .. it's not hard to create seperate .sm files for parts of the plane. I did this for the propeller and the cockpit on the yak thanks to (raiders?) help it only takes a few minutes.

Re: BoB planes, I have a faked up boulton paul defiant I use offline. It has a rough FM and power turret, etc.

Thanks Pachy, I'm glad someone appreciates the 200hrs of work I put in

I'm prepared to bet my house that the bf109 did have aileron trim but didn't have rudder trim. However, this was adjustable on the ground. Most Allied pilots attest to the heavy rudder pressure required to keep the 109 flying straight at speeds above 300mph.
