I read in Baptism of Fire that an armament was designed and installed in the Me163, it was an armament of, basically, flak shells in 10 upward facing canisters installed in the wing roots. These were fired when a specially designed light sensitive cell was blocked by a shadow. So basically, the cell was switched on when the target (a bomber) was in range, it flew underneath it and when the bombers shadow fell over the cells the cannons fired in sequence. It was a success, downing a total of 5 bombers before the war was won. The cannons were so powerful, that on a test, a patch of mist triggered the cannons, but without the special sequencer, all 10 cannons fired at once, the force of the blast ripped the plane to pieces, blew the canopy to pieces! I'm telling you, find Batism of Fire and read it!!!

Aladar, I know about that. They are called Jagdfaust. SWOTL has these and they work as you say. You fly under a B-17 and the light sensitivity thing triggers the cannons and BOOM! Scratch one B-17. Quite a neat idea if you ask me.

THey tried a reverse version for ground attack in the Henschel HS129. THe device used and explosive charge trapped between a heavy weight and the projectile. The whole lot was held together by a weak tie-rod. The idea was that the heavy weight balanced the recoil. They had problems with the photo-sensitive triggeron that though. The pilot had to hope the right thing triggered it!

I wonder if the Me163 system registered many kills......

The Jagdfaust used 50mm grenades fired from rifled tubes in the wing root.

In SDOE we could make 10 gun tubes with 1 ammo each to be assigned to the '2' key and fired with sync on. Since its 50mm I assume the power is same as the 50mm Mk214,ja?

The HS129 also had a magnetic device that set off the downward firing canon. The soviets hated that one since it went off whenever it flew over a tank. It was rather sucessful.

I went looking for that book on Amazon.com. They didn't have any listing for it. Anyone know where I can find a copy (to sit on my very crowded shelf of unread books?)

A special version of the Fw190 had these also. Three of the cannons on each side of the rear fuselage.

Here's an idea on how to implement this:

Make some long cylindrical models lying horizontally across the wings, in rows. No drag or airfoil properties on these objects. Make a DOF to activate on a keystroke, which will move the object(s) so they are pointing vertically.
If each one can be set up to move seperately, you'll be able to select which jagdfaust to arm.
Add a weak breaking DOF. Now, when the Me163 flies close enough under another aircraft, and the "pole" is up (armed), this will cause the weak DOF to break off. If the DOF is weak enough, it should only cause a slight jolt in the Me163. The breaking DOF will cause a 50mm cannon in the wing to fire vertically (with 'inpFire...)
I think it can work! Pete?

BUMP, BUMP, BUMP!!

sorry, I'm a bit impatient

If somebody will send me the current 163 SM, I'll try it out.
May end up trying it on another plane otherwise.
