I was in the USAF for 11 years up until this past May. I started out as a C-5 Galaxy Crew Chief, then became a Flight Engineer on them in 1996. I built up over 1100 hours on them and then became an Iso-Dock area supervisor in one of the large hangars at Travis AFB. This was after my wife and I realized that my being gone was killing the marriage. A lot of guys got divorced, I chose not too and am very happy I didn't. I've since got out and now work as a 3D graphic artist in Southern California (and of course love it), and even get to work at home full time. It's very cool. IP: Logged |

Spanky here... Renovation work right now, SUCKS ass. Always getting torn bettween the forman and the boss who both have there own ideas of what I should be doing at the moment. And they get jerked around by the manager of the hotel we are working on which makes my job harder. I do alot of the capentry and stuff, Hang doors, tear down and rebuild walls, re formica the bath room vanitys, put in the counter tops and crap, It pretty much sucks. and its only $7 an hour. Like I went to college to make $7 an hour. Pretty much wastes my Cabinet making skills cause all they want is quick and sloppy. I'm thinking of going back to school this fall for small engine mech, just cause someone else might be paying for it and it beats working, ya can never have too much college if ya ask me. I might go back AGAIN (4th time) for aircraft structual mech in a couple years after the wife goes and she can support me. I couldn't say EXACTLY what I want to do, tons of ideas running through my head. I'm pretty good with computers and could be a hell of alot better with some college in that feild under my belt but frankly I can't stand fixing computers even though I'm good at it so i don't want to get payed to do it. Nor Do I feel like dressing in a suit. LOL One of the other jobs I have done is mountain bike mech, LOL But you never make good money doing that unless you get on with a factory team maintaining their bikes. IP: Logged |

Neal your 50!!! Boy do I feel much better now, thanks. der_Boom you are NEVER to old to go back to school. I'm 41 years old. I'm a programmer/analyst, I used to write COBOL programs running under UNIX with MicroFocus Workbench. I just took a new position in my company writing VB6 apps interfacing lab equipment for the techs to enter data. The company is sending me to VBITS in Orlando,Fla next month "Life is Good" I'm also now doing a lot of NT stuff too. I love my job, there is nothing like writing code. If this helps you I started when I was 30 years old, yea I was a little old but look at me now. My problem is that I didn't know what I wanted to do, what made me happy. I didn't do every good in high school, just didn't see the point in it, school was such a turn off. I used to work in retail after that I did some electrical work, what a pain that was! You would be under a house hearing those rednecks yelling at you "No, you *#(#)@ OVER HERE!". I starting to think, well I like to play computer games and the pc was fun to mess with so I took a class in BASIC. Soon I was hooked, programming is like a puzzle or a game to me and I couldn't put it down. I stayed in the computer room for hours on end, I just loved it. Maybe you should give it a try, take a class and see what you think, you're never too old to start. Hey look at me, if I can do it anyone can do it. I'll NEVER forget my teachers, they are the best thing that has ever happen to me, well that and programming. Good teachers are everything, I just wished we had more of them. Hi I am 34, married with one son of 11 months,( a baby boy ) and another one due in December. Soon to start teacher training in spetember to teach history. I hope I pass my maths. I hate it, have a pychological block.
Went back to education late, got a Master of Arts degree and Bachelor of Arts honours degree. Before I just bummed around, trying to fine my way, got low paid jobs, (at least it was honest work), such a kitchen porter, storeman, portering etc, did my head in so i left to work in europe. I thought about joning the army when I was 16, went to the recruiting office and got shouted at, was told to come back next day. I was so scard stiff I never went back so the next year I went to join the Royal marines and quickly changed my mind. I wish I did it, it would of made a man of me soon rather than later. Still i did not too bad ------------------

thx himdog i think its the right decision im going to make wel i love to do programming or something like that but its giong to be hard, but ones i get the feel for it its like riding a bike (i hope )wel i got visual basic 6.0 learning edition installed on my computer and got two books for learning it but the problem would be i have to teach it myself because there are no lessons for visual basic where i live but i give it a try to see where i end hmm just got some folders home today for home study about programming, wel its not visual basic, but pascal and cobol and if i giong to study for a it i dont have to go to school but they give lessons tro internet you get a cd with the lessons you need to know and some off the learning things you need (book,cd)then you make some given questions and send them tro e-mial to them they check them and send them back there are several moduls you need to know think it was 7 moduls and ones you know all off them you get exam. in it soo whatever i giong to do i dont have to go to school so its pretty good for me that why i can make money from the job i now have and then learn at home for my new job so wen im done and have my diploma i find new job and quit the old one , oh and if i dont know anything about something i can ask the college who teach it to me tro e-mial so its darn sound good to me ------------------ JG3_der_Boom [This message has been edited by der boom (edited 07-25-2000).] IP: Logged |
