Guys, I was watching Junkyard Wars tonight and they showed a little diagram of this contraption they were working on. It gave me an idea for a working method of stopping, ie an arrestor hook type thing. I tried it just now and IT WORKS! I was just flying at 190 knots in the Me262, touched down about 1/4 way down the runway at Royal Tonbridge field, and get this, I stopped QUICKLY by the time I was parallel with the tower using NO brakes! That's a sudden stop in 1/4 the length of the runway from 190 knots.I'm gonna test more tonight and post more about this neat new trick tomorrow (or later tonight if it keeps me up all night). This is pretty exciting and I can't believe I didn't think of this earlier. IP: Logged |

Thats a great show! And HOW did you get arrestor hook method working?????????????? You WILL tell me!! Landing on a carrier is a pain is the A$$ (I was just attempting to land Zeros and F4Us on the Akagi not more than 10 min. ago) If you have a good solution I will bow down and kiss your feet. Alright, here goes. It's kind-of just a "wannabe" arrestor hook. What I thought about was the wheel properties. Since wheels interact with the ground so well I decided to lay one on it's side, make it a child of the 262's fuselage, add a dof to it so I can lower it flat (and kinda smash it into the ground a little), and have it for now, work via the canopy key just for testing. Sometimes I think putting two wheels in contact with the ground works better, but other times it seems like one will work. Having a wheel simply brush the ground isn't enough, you have to have it push hard down (but not so much that it lifts the plane way up). I'm not sure this would work well with all the tail-draggers in the game, but for tricycle gear it seems good.I put a dof between the main gears and have the tire on it's side just about directly under the very aft part of the airplane. Then using about a 5 degree rotational DOF I test it out. It's neat because you hit the ground, hit your key, watch the tire go down (for me about 1 second timing is fine), and it actually slows you down fast. Until we get real arrestor hooks working this could be the answer. And since you can adjust the switchin distance on the wheel (to 1 so you never see it), you CAN still have a hook back there that lowers and appears to catch the ground/a wire etc, using the same key to activate it. If any of you want more specifics let me know, but that's really all there is to it. One or two tires, on it's side (with NO roatational property, it just stays still) will slow you down when pushed into the ground a bit. IP: Logged |

For the first time EVER (for me at least) I was able to land at Abbeville Field (Dover map) on that wooden platform, coming to a complete stop in the 262 tonight. Pretty neat [This message has been edited by Pete Hawk (edited 07-20-2000).] IP: Logged |

Lord what a great show that is!... I was hoping Bowser would win though, (Can't believe the Brothers in Arms lost to the goofy Chemical Brothers)! Can't wait till 2001 for more IP: Logged |

Thanks It'd be nice to have the "real" thing, but I guess that won't come until later.IP: Logged |

Actually, why cant we have the real thing? Why would it be so hard to do? You just need a few lines with MANY obPoints on them.IP: Logged |

Pete, what if you had it not push down so hard and try running over the wires on the carrier, does it catch? TS

Or what if the carrier deck was set to a low friction material and the area where the wires are were set to rubber...

Could someone email me the carrier with the working cable(s)? It's been a while and I'm not sure which one it is anymore.hawker@jackedin.com thanks! TS, I'll look into it. Good ideas though. IP: Logged |

Tail, I agree, I was thinking of converting one of the carriers material values to mud to see if that adds enough friction, main reason being is that the Ark Royal is very very hard to land on, it's such a short deck (about 720ft), it's really hard to touch down and stop. I've treid it with brakes locked on as soon as I lower them, which will stop me on the deck, just.. but I always end up upside downIP: Logged |

I hope someone fixes this problem and tries to figure out how to get carrier wires to work.IP: Logged |
