Well after 3 weeks of spending 3/4 of my free time at this, its starting to pay off. I spent an hour getting the exhaust pipes to be as low a poly count as possible while still having them look reasonable. As you can see I still need to do the cockpit. Im going to try to squeeze everything on 2 256x256 textures, plus maybe a 128x128 if necessary. The black cockpit is just there until I get a reasonable green metal texture to replace it with. Back to work.

Man, that's the absolutely most gorgeous, mouth-watering, super-excellent 3d model of a P-40 I've ever seen. This game really has some of the pretties, most beautifully modelled a/c's ever seen in any sim. Take Combat Flight Sim, as an example. There are hundreds of user-made planes there. Most of them are low-quality crap with far too few polys. Only one or two designers are really good over there. But here, we don't have that many planes, but those we have are absolutely drop-dead gorgeous, better than anything to come straight out of a boxed sim. Quality over quantity is what counts.IP: Logged |

semmern, we have ALOT of planes man! What are you talking about... "we dont have that many planes"? Hehehe I just counted 64 planes in my game (including the Italian, and WWI planes but not the tank) And we got more comming. Back to the topic... yes that P-40 model is the best Ive seen. Falck, for the crowl flaps right behind the engine, will you model those folding and unfolding? You could tie them with the flaps. One of the user made P-40s in CFS does this. It looks sweet.[This message has been edited by ArgonV (edited 07-20-2000).] IP: Logged |

Argon, when I said we don't have that many planes, I was comparing with Combat FS. They have planes way up in the hundreds. Most of them are real crap. We haven't got that many, but I'll rather have a few excellent planes than a HD-load of crap IP: Logged |

When I was a boy and decided to buy my first model airplane, it was the P40. Ever since then it's always been my sentimental favorite to me.That model looks superb, and I throw my thanks into the mix with everyone else. Thank you so much! PR=FC= IP: Logged |

*sniff* thanks for the kind words guys its really nice to have that kind of motovation after putting so much effort into this thing.I should have clarified that Im building this as a P40F (all models after the F were very similar in appearance) which is why it lacks the small intake on top of the engine and the iron gunsights in front of the cockpit. Laika: Very useful 3view, thanks! Ill definitely be using that to help build the front panel. Also it appears to be an E model (with the top intake and large bottom intake, also slightly shorter than the F). It will definitely be used when I go back and build the C and E variants. And thanks for the excellent work on your Pe-2. Its high quality work like that that drives me to be extra picky about the quality of this. ArgonV: yes I designed it from the beginning to have movable cowl flaps. I havent determined just how Im going to handle these. Some models of the P40F had the operate automatically. If I did that I'd tie them to either engine rpm or temp. The video at http://www.zenoswarbirdvideos.com says theyre to be opened for all high power operations. Otherwise theyll be manually operated which would require me designating a new key for them. I dont think, at this point, Ill be able to have them actually cool the engine, but we'll see.

Falck, I haven't been past the forum for a while, let alone leave any feedback. But when I do it's usually for a plea for this, my fav' plane. Thanks for finally making this happen. As I remember it, this was going to be Pete Hawk's first plane project but got superseded, or sidetracked and other folks attempts never reached fruition either. I'm looking forward to painting some toothy RAF paint-schemes for this beaut! Nice one!- Fenris

Spanky here... Great stuff, Glad to see someone picked it up. I will send you all the stuff I have if you want man. Tons of drawings, pics and data. TONS. Its 50 megs including the film from zenos LOL. I guess I could sort it out a bit first LOL
I had planed on linking the cowl flaps to the throttle and It looked cool. The limits of Openplane depress me to much to work on planes. Along with all the little bugs and work arounds needed to get a plane in the air. I'm glad some of you guys have the dedication to get these suckers in the air. IP: Logged |

Or Spanky could it just be that you are too lazy? Just playing with ya man. I know how depressing OPS is. I felt the same way about what I could do with the Mistel concept with OPS, but that didnt turn out too bad did it?IP: Logged |

Spanky here... Yeah that played a part in it but mostly it was frustration with all the tools. I would love ONE tool that did everything from start to finish or at least a 3d tool and then OPS. And nothing in bettween and no work arounds. The lack off good tutorials doesn't help either. IP: Logged |

SV's tutorials more than make up for the low number of tutorials out there. I do wish that OPS could tie into olc and smd though, for extraction purposes. Right now ops lod exports dont work for me in ac3d.IP: Logged |

Spanky here.. All kinds of stuff man, way to much to solve in a couple posts. Plus I've lost all motivation to make anything for SDOE now. I don't even fire up the game anymore. I just float around the forum seeing if any new planes or patches have come out. Thanks for the offer though, and you can be sure I'll be flying that sweet plane after you put it out. Maybe It will remotivate me. If your looking for any info let me know.

You, my brother, where (?) one of the first I met here so I'm sorry to hear you're no longer motivated - Did you fly online sometimes ??? Hope to see ("kill" ) you there ! Falck, Great looking P40! The OPS LOD export problem seems to be the same as the OPS LOD import problem was, starting with vertex index of 1 instead of 0, should be easy for Bryan to fix if we nag him enough. OPS LOD export is also writing the alpha and rgb values out as a hex long when it should be a hex short. Hippie.
