Can you tell it's been raining here for the past 3 weeks? I'm getting cabin fever.

The AI drops these guys on cue although it still has the existing parachute airfoil which doesnt behave very parachute-like.

Maybe one of the DOF damage gurus (Bjorn?) can help me figure out how to get a delay in there before their chutes open too.

Ok.. I'll admit it.. I'm a sadist. I've been flying my bomber above the formation and releasing my paratroopers so I can watch them go bouncing and spinning off the bombers below.

Didnt all paratroopers during wwii use static lines and therefore open their canopies just after leaving the aircraft?

The chutes didn't open right away they sort of trailed out in a streamer for a couple seconds then popped open, I think.

True. The line was prolly 40 or so feet long and when it reached its length it pulled the chute out.

i just realized something.
Isnt the reason ppl on parachutes go through the group because they have no collision points? (The same reason they dont take fire)

We could make paratroopers that actually dont fall through the ground proabably, that would be nice

Yes! I was thinking about this too, have them hit the ground and stand there, smoking stogies.. you could protect them from strafing, etc.

I have no idea how SDOE works, but I imagine if you want them to stand, you need to put their center of gravity below their feet, and a contact point at their feet. Just a thought.

If you add Dirk's head to the model, you may be able to "fly" the paratroop (at least control his head movement). Make his upper torso a gun position object and give him a .30 cal...

TS,

Let's discuss what the problem is and how it can be solved.

One thing that struck my mind is not to use a timer, but something with the (now) classic breaking airfoil object. As the paratrooper falls, it accelerates, stretching out a DOF with a drag airfoil. If well tuned, the DOF will break when a predefined airspeed is reached, which could be the signal to open th e chute. Would make it more important to have decent altitude when jumping. Probably a combination of that and some kind of timer, though, just to be on the safe side. Might even be good to have the chute itself attached with a DOF so that if you leave at ludicrous speed, you lose the chute and die anyway
