Another thing I need to "bitch" about. Ive noticed that some stock aircraft and some user-created WWII aircraft have no pilots! Does any one have updates for these? I find this highly annoying for a sim that's becomming more realistic. I'll list all the planes I have that have no pilots after I go find out which ones they are.

Allied Planes W/O Pilots:
P-51B
Huey
A-36A
P-47D
P-80B
F4F-4
P-38J
Manchester
Hurricane
Stock Spitfire
Lancaster
Typhoon

Axis Planes W/O Pilots:

Hmmm... It seems there arent any Axis planes with out pilots. It appears the Allies have more planes than pilots! This is bad due to the fact there is a war going on.

You must be missing some files (pilot.sm's?) They all have pilots.

Maybe you should comply with the online standard if only so you continuously make an ass of yourself bitching about others work when you aren't even looking at it from the rest of the communities shoes.

Doesn't this belong in Help/FAQ? Or perhaps Flame Wars? I don't know, but the effluent around here is starting to get bothersome...

d0gmA...

I must admit- your replys to people's posts have had a certain bite to them lately. Something wrong? It may be hard to believe, but not everyone flies this game online. If I didn't, I sure wouldn't wanna download a HUGE file when people offer up small files everyday. It would be much easier if everyone complied with the "online standard"...I know...but who wants to wait until the next plane-pack to fly a new plane. There are months between them... so if you don't want to answer the question- then don't. But don't chase away the few people we have here...it has always been a helpful community- and I'd hate to see it change now.

Jeeves,
Had this post been in the help/faq section I would agree with you. However seeing as this post came directly after the "plane builders could pay more attention to detail" post, I took it more of a "General Bitching" post in which I felt my opinion applied apologies if this was a plea for help.

To be blunt and to the point the online standard is meant as a production level representation of the plane creators work not some old hat betas that exist around the various sites.

Why do I have a strong opinion here? Its not my work being criticized. Simple Who wants to create anything for this game when their reward is being called retarted ? Being told that "They need to pay more attention to detail".

This sim will die out much faster if everyone gets overly critical of the people who are trying to do some good for it.

Smile its only my opinion Maybe you wouldn't really like me in real life cuz I promise to tell ya when your dress makes ya look real fat.

Ok look, the reson why I asked is because Ive seen other people who also have this problem. And I dont like the HUGE plane pack files because 1. I dont fly on-line 2. the plane pack files are huge and 3. I like to customize certain things and I cant do that with par files. And as for my other post, I did not say "pay more attention to detail" I simply said to "complete" the game more. You guys used to bitch all the time about how incomplete the game was when it first came out and now your doing the same thing. IMO dOgma, your are a hippocrit and cannot take critisism or helpful suggestions that, in the long run, will make the game much much better. And another thing, I never once dissed anyones work or called it "retarded" so stop sticking words in my mouth!

Argon, would ya just give dogma a break? You come storming in here firing on all cylinders and expect us to what, go "Ya know what Argon, we've been cutting corners just because we're a bunch of lazy sods so because you slapped us upside the head we're now going to tailor-make our products to your offline desires"? Sorry man, but really, what did you expect. Sure we've all spouted off at one time or another, but we've all also been put in our place. I though dogma was reasonable, if a little firm in his reply. Please try to relax a little and see this from other people's perspectives? I'm not trying to take sides or anything but you're really coming across to a neutral observer as trying to pick a fight here!

d0gmA...

This really wasn't meant as an attack on you...it wasn't just one post I was talking about...I have noticed your posts for the last week or so. I understand how hard the criticism is to take-- but at least you are getting some kind of feedback!

I released Dover Part 3 over a month ago- and despite all those who downloaded it-- never heard a thing. Not that I expect that-- but even a comment on how I could improve on them would be nice...it may not seem like as much work-- but mission making can be a real time-consuming activity

Now-- can we stop talking about my dress-size please

Ok, 1. I did not come storming in here. Did you see the wink next to the "bitch" quote? That means I was kidding about when I said "another thing I need to "bitch" about" All I wanted to know is there a fix to that problem w/o using the plane packs? A simple yes/no/I dunno would be a normal response. Jerry gave me a good response and thats all I asked(thanx Jerry) Now as for the reaction of DOgma, that was a little harsh. Now I never once said anyone was lazy either. If I had that on my mind I would say it. I always speak my mind. Im not trying to pick a fight with anyone either. Perhaps this post should of gone in the FAQ section...... Then people wouldnt jump to conclusions as much.

I appologize to you ArgonV as I missed your post prior to mine becuase it wasn't there when I started to type my responce. Had I have seen that one, it would have been apperent that you were just looking for help and not just bitching for the sake of bitching.

The plane packs aren't just for online use. If they were we could make them a lot smaller by ommitting things like hangar graphics, training missions, ect. As far as wanting to tinker with stuff you can unbig the parfiles from the plane packs and gain access to everything they contain quite easily with the openplane tools.

Quite a lot of the bugs you mentioned not only here but in your other thread are already fixed in plane packs although I doubt anyone has spell checked them and yes there are still bugs and oversights. Plus several of the planes in the plane packs aren't available for seperate download so you may not have an alternate way of obtaining them.

Lastly I haven't seen you criticize any of my work yet so I don't think you can judge how well I take criticizm.

I've found that if you turn down the detail sliders in the options menu this can cause the pilot lods to switch out at very short distances. Check that the detail slider is turned right up - this could be the route of you problems.

(joins Yardstick in WRENCHING this topic back on track)...

If you have ContestPack 1.1 and PlanePack 5.3b, you should not be having this problem. However, if you don't have those, the problem itself is fairly easy to solve. The only time I saw this was with the first beta of the He-162. If you have that, and no later 162s, it MAY be a contributing factor. Anyway...

MOST of the pilots "live" in the "pilot" folder (FS/Media/pilot). Depending on your install of the sim, this folder may or may not exist, because it MAY be included in a parfile. Since your Axis planes are all good, what is most likely is that your "pilotsit.sm" model is missing from the pilot folder. If you have a pilot folder, you probably have a German pilot in there. If you have the F4U-1D, you have a Navy pilot in there. Make a copy of either pilot, and rename it to "pilotsit.sm" This will at least get you a pilot of some kind in the planes.

If you want to go further and restore the "correct" pilots, you need to be able to use the BigMunger tool to extract the game files from the parfiles. Somewhere lurking in the parfiles on the CD is the original pilot folder, containing the pilots for the US and British planes. Copying those pilot models and their textures into the pilot folder will restore them. (Make sure you don't overwrite Dirk or the USN pilots or you'll lose the motion feature on them!)

One last thing to check, and it requires OPS. Open the airplane in question in OPS. On the parts list on the left, find the pilot. Check the file reference. A few of the planes may have their pilot models installed in actual folder for the AIRPLANE and not the pilot folder. If that's the case, and there is no pilot model in the aircraft folder, you won't see one in the game. Then you'll need to either modify the aircraft model file reference to point to the pilot folder, or preferably just copy a pilot model into the aircraft folder and make sure you give it the correct name.

If none of that worked, your installation is pretty-well stuffed, and you should consider a re-install, or at least a download of PP5.3 and CP1.1. There were a LOT of upgrades to the models in those two packs, well worth the download time IMO...although I AM biased

P-51B - only Beta1, still has many problems.
Huey - as jag said above.
A-36A - Lost support after dole left.
P-47D - Work in progress.
P-80B - Work in progress.
F4F-4 - Also work in progress.
P-38J - Probably the switching distance, works for me.
Manchester - Was mistakenly added to a planepack, should have never been released.
Hurricane - Switching distance.
Stock Spitfire - Switching distance.
Lancaster - Switching distance.
Typhoon - Switching distance.

You can add the Ki-84 and Ki-61 to that list since i haven't added pilots to them.

you bail out of the Ki-61 and nothing happens , you just can't control the plane anymore.

Speaking of the Lanc/Manc mix, I do have 5.3b and the Contest Pack, and I do want to stay online compatible-- but my Lanc is gone with just these two packs in, and it is there when I add in my oldaircraft folder... so what is the file between the two that puts the Lanc back in and keeps me online compatible?

Jeeves, I am not 100% sure but 5.3b should have added an aircraft/lanc dir with just a lanc.sm file in it. If that got moved to the oldaircraft dir that would be the problem. I just checked the CP1.1 isntaller and I don't see it moving that dir tho so I don't know why your lanc wouldn't show up. I will check my clean install when I get home though to verify this.

Razer, Jedi, and all who will listen, please bear witness:

I don't have a pilot in most of my allied fighters! It is not a switching problem at all. The pilot is simply not there. When I try to eject, i get nothing. I do get what razer said - I lose control of the aircraft.

This cost me my virtual life in a P51 in the war in Dover 2 on last Sunday. It also happens in the 38 for me as well.

I will try jedi's suggestions and hope for the best.

I guess what I am saying is this problem seems to exist for more than just a few people.

I do have 1.5 patch and 5.3b plane pack and contest pack 1.1

PROBLEM SOLVED!!!!!!! You know what it was? The pilotSit.sm file was corrupted! I tried to load it up in OPS and it gave me a bunch of garbage code for an error message. So, I liked the new P-51d pilotSit and just copied and renamed it and whala! I have pilots now!

Thanks to Jedi's helpful hints...

I renamed the pilotSit.sm file in my C:\Program Files\Fighter Squadron\Media\Pilot directory. I can now eject from all allied fighter planes.!

Thanks Jedi
