Don't you think so?
'real war' B17s were almost immune to rifle-calibre rounds, and only direct hits from flak can break it up.
In SDOE I can shoot down a B17 with a JU88A4(1 MG), set the skill and morale to very low.
And I see the fuse break up very easily

I agree. It was never like that in Memphis Belle. I'll see IF I can do any thing about it. Thats one big if.

I "MAY" take up the task of improving the B17 as I think it is a shame we never use it online as it has to many lods and frame rate kills along with poor DM and FM : - (

I would like to:

-Reduce frame killing by tremoving all NONE vital parts of the B17 like internal stucture....and over usage of lods on none vital parts

-Improve DM after all like the welington the design and structure of the aircraft enebled it to sustain HEAVYbattle damage...however one lucky shot could damge cables.........just a thought...

-Improve FM...maybee....it seems ok at the mo.....

This is IF nobody is already doing this and WHEN I finish my sopwith pup project....don't want to take on more than I can 'andle ya know!

MrBlob,

Removing many of the inner things is a good way to reduce the FPS hit, but I don't think it's enough. There are probably too many polys on the outside too. What's needed are more LODs for each part, and very aggressive switchouts. I think JT did this very very well for the P47, which is extremely detailed close up, but still not too heavy a load for the computer, since the the details switch out early.

I believe kopper has done a lot of work with the DM...especially the Lanc- but I'd bet he has done work on the Fort as well. Check with him and maybe save yourself a lot of work

Iknow that the ops guyz had somthing going on the 17.If anything was done might i suggest maybe using the B-17F as the guinea pig,try maybe optmizing the 3d model itself as i believe Brian Russell thought that alot off the moidels could be optomized for online play without making them ugly.Unfortunately it is also cpu power as the 17 isnt hitting me half as bad as it used to with my cel 400 128 ram,now i have a p-3 600eb 128 ram same old banshee card and big improvments with details cranked up now also.

The B17 is very FPS friendly for me compared to many of the user made addon planes. Actually I get the same frame rate inside the B17 cockpit as I do in the p47 with the simple cockpit installed.

This is ancient history but I have a B-17 .sm file that I think Whirlwind did which improves the DM of the B-17.

Does anyone else remember this? It's a 819KB .sm file.

I remember the modified DM b17, still have file somewere, made it tough as old boots, needed to pick off one engine at a time to get it down and then it wouldn't breakup unless it hit the ground vertical. Bit too stong for online with the damage bug but great for offline gunnery practice.
