SPanky here... New article on www.firingsquad.com Its all about the big upgrade choice, new cpu or new vid card? The usually have really good articles. Just to voice my opinion. I find SDOE to be a very CPU dependent game. I run a voodoo banshee and its not uncommon to have FPS up in the 70s for me. I'm only using a 333p2 to back it up. My upgrade of choice would be a new CPU. Why? Cause even when no planes are in view, if thers alot of them my FPS drops If ya ask me it sounds like i just don't have enough CPU power to back up the vid card. IP: Logged |

CPU definitely.. I barely noticed a FPS change going from TNT1 to TNT2 ultra but the CPU upgrade made a huge difference. TS

Put a Ge-Force with that 333 Spanky, you WILL see a difference. The Ge-Force takes a major load of the CPU, so even a low spec one will enjoy the difference. IP: Logged |

Spanky here... They would probly rise but I don't think it would be an amazing difference. Specialy since SDOE doesn't have the T&L in it. If it did then I would think there would be a big differnce.
someone running a p2 350 or lower and a geforce give me some FPS #s so I can compare.
THe highest you have even seen and with a couple other planes in view from inside the cockpit. Besides that right now in this town a geforce is $299 I can buy a cel 533 for $239. I'm pretty sure buying the cel would do more for me then the geforce.

I have a Voodoo3 2000 PCI and you wouldnt want to hear the spd of my CPU, but I can have a respectable FPS for such a slow machine. --------------------------------------------- [This message has been edited by Army puke SFC (edited 06-02-2000).] [This message has been edited by Army puke SFC (edited 06-02-2000).] [This message has been edited by Army puke SFC (edited 06-02-2000).] IP: Logged |

I got a GeForce256, but have an AMD k6 II-350 to go with it. Upgrading would mean a new motherboard for me, not likely in the near future . For the price concience, what is the best MB/CPU combo currently?------------------ MadMoe=FC= IP: Logged |

Spanky here.... That does suck man. I would say that if your going to upgrade get your self a sweet socket 370 MoBo. And that way for now you can buy a cheap celeron chip. and later you can still upgrade to a nice P3 if you run into some money.

Actually, Spanky the Mad Dog, if I were him, I'd stay AMD. Their CPU's are just as fast, and he can get a great motherboard and a CPU running at the same MHZ for the same price of just getting an Intel CPU. The T-birds are coming out next week, followed in 2 weeks by the cheaper Durons (sounds like a battery or a paint). I guess to see if you are fill rate limited, try running Unreal, or UT at various resolutions. If the frame rate starts levelling off after a certain point, you are fill rate limited, so you need a faster video card. If the FPS keeps dropping, you need a new CPU, of course later you might find that you also need a new video card. If you are getting the frame rate you want, go for the CPU, since the top dog video cards are around $300-350 and a much faster CPU is around the same (Sharkyextreme.com has the 750 weighing in at around $343, and the 700 showing up at $266). If you are into O/C'ing things, check out some reviews on the Celeron II 533 and 566. Some of them were able to be overclocked to 800mhz and 850mhz, respectively, and running stably. A 750 will definitely outhorse a banshee, especially since most of the new video cards have a hard time taxing an 850. IP: Logged |
