Sorry for the off-topic post, but I thought all the talented painters/skinners/tweakers here might be interested to know:

I've just released a utility that allows you to unpack and then repack the contents of the Jane's WWII Fighters in-game data archives. These archives contain all of the plane skins, cockpit graphics, object textures, terrain tiles, plane, object and cockpit 3D object files, flight model coefficients, object movement coefficients, museum interface images, text, captions and descriptions etc. In short, the whole enchilada.

Most of these files, apart from the 3D model data, are stored in bitmap or ASCII text and can therefore be easily edited. Once edited, they can then be repacked back into the archives and used in the game itself. The end result is that almost everything in the game can now be customized. Some sample screenshots showing modified plane skin and terrain tiles can be found here [note: xoom.com doesn't allow external links, so you may have to cut and paste the URLs below into your browser's address textpane]:

The modified textures shown in the images above were used to test the utility, they are not intended to be representative of the final results that could be achieved

The utility is called SQzip and can be downloaded from the Downloads section of WWII Fighters Online http://members.xoom.com/ww2f It's a 31K download and comes with a text document explaining its use.

If you have any questions or comments, please feel free to email me at dicksons@direct.ca or to post a message on the Message Board at http://members.xoom.com/ww2f

Enjoy!

S.

P.S. A more user-friendly graphical user interface around the utility is currently under development.

AGAS-5,
Yes, I know xoom doesn't allow external links. To see the pics, you'll have to copy and paste the URLs into your browser's address textpane. Since we're probably going to be uploading a lot more screenshots, I'm looking into getting space on a site that does allow external links.

Actually-- they worked for me Thanks-- can't wait to see some new skins. Noow will they be available in the Downlaods section eventually- and also-- if you like someone's skin, do you have to still unpack it, put in the skin, and repack it? Kinda over my head if that's the case-- but I guess it'll be good for the more technical minded

Jeeves,
We're going to try to make the mod installation process as painless as possible The utility is DOS command-line based at the moment, but a Windows version is in the works. Inserting a new skin will hopefully be as easy as running something like WinZip.

Judge,
Since you informed me in another forum how to remove that nasty red arrow and the target box while in "Head Tracking" mode- it has truly raised the immersion level for me especially in dogfighting in WWII Fighters. Thanks for all the work and keep us posted.
Like Jeeves, I hope those of us with weak minds will be able to handle all the upcoming mods and downloads. Use of the KISS method, if possible, would be wonderful.
I didn't mean that you had a weak mind there Jeeves. Just referring to myself really.
All those missions you've created and the fact of what you do for a living clearly show some brain activity Jeeves!

Although the fact that most of my colleagues will be done in two weeks and I've signed on to teach 6 weeks of summer school means I may have possibly misplaced my brain lately Either that-- or I'm just poor
