I am typing on my Notebook computer because my PC is down.
When I try to boot it up does not go through any diagnostic screens. It just says .
It will not take any commands beyond that point.
Is the motherboard bad or what?

I am so stressed over this!! Please Help!

If you have checked all the power cables,, try finding a little jumper on your mother board, that resets the Bios,, Move it's position then power up, or try to,,, then MOVE it back to it's original position;

Maybe...!!!

Make sure all the cards inside the box are firmly seated in their slots. Sometimes one will work its way slightly out of its slot. The computer won't go into self-test if that happens.

You might also have a bad memory chip.

Might be a good idea to unplug before you mess with the jumper if your not already dead. Sometimes the CD/DVD (if applicable)
goes bad causing read problems at start-up. Or the hard drive has gone south on ya. Can you tell me what type computer were talking about? There is a strong possability that you will require a professional PC person which I'm not. Pye I don't recommend that Maaco crack the case to access the mother board and the jumpers. Good luck Maaco

generaly if it were only the battery, the system would still boot, only it would have incorrect date/time and start with CMOS default settings, so I doubt thats your problem, can you be more specific in the error message, it would help if yo ucould tell us exactly what message it gives.

errr,
I don't think so, try contacting the maker of the computer or get someone that has the experience to crack the case for ya. Listen to the hard drive and CD to see if their making noise. Last time you used it did it make any unusual noise??? When it starts can you see if it's reading the drives, look at the little LED's on the tower. If they blink it's readind the drives, if not I suggest a pro...
Answer the above

Maaco, have you tried to boot up in safe mode? If you can not boot up in safe mode I'd do what slk says, take it to a pro.

I realize that I am (just a girl)but I built this computer so I am comfortable "cracking the case". I just am not familiar with the CMOS settings so much.
And as far as the error message goes, thats all it says. CMOSCHECKSUM BAD I can't get it to do anything beyond that.

I didn't mean to be bitchy in the first paragraph but you would be amazed at how many guys talk down to you when you talk about computers.

And no pics for help teases this time, hehe

Sorry to tell you Maaco, that a bad CMOS checksum means you gotta buy a new motherboard, some how, though a virus, incorrect flashing of the BIOS, power surge or similar your CMOS has become damaged, you could buy a new CMOS chip to replace the old one, but that will cost as much as a new board, but be harder to get hold of.

Bonjour Maaco,
Before you get the checksum msg, have you tried to flash the bios? It could be a reason to your mishap.
This msg could display when the flash version is not supported by your motherboard (at least by the eprom).
If you have not made a copy of your old bios, just do the same like me: *sigh* buy another mboard. Sorry, this solution is the only one I can provide you (as it worked for me...).

I had exactly this problem after a flash bios update, I took the bios chip out to track down a replacement and got nowhere. As one last try before buying a new motherboard I reinserted the chip and rebooted, it worked fine. Maybe the chip lost its proper connection during the reflash, maybe it just worked loose at exactly the same time as the flash bios update, I just dont know but try gently pressing the bios chip in and then try a reboot. Hope it works.

Maaco,

Try pressing F1, F10 or DEL when the error message comes up. You should be able to get into the Bios menus and boot the pc after that. If you've lost your settings ( date , drives etc ) your battery is probably flat.

Finally,
After twelve or so reboots I got into the setup menu and managed to reset everything and save it.
Had to reconnect the keyboard several times as well to get it to respond.
It seems to be working well now and I can't wait to back online!

Thanks for all your suggestions.

Thats ok guys. I can come across as a bitch sometimes. I was very frustrated at the time of posting and and could have thrown this computer around the room.
You can take it out on me in the air. Wait a minute, that didn't sound rite, hehe. You know what I meant.
