I upgraded from w95 to w98. I have a 300mhz system with 128megs ram and a Crative Labs 16meg Riva TNT. With win95, I could step up the resolution to whatever I wanted. Now, all I get is 640x480 whether I set it to "software" or direct6x, or whatever it's called. What to do?

try installing the graphics card drivers, it could easily be that win98 changed them on it's install, thinking for some wierd Windows reason that it had better drivers than you had.. it sounds to me like it's a driver prob anyway.. see what others have to say

Is your monitor listed as only a vga or standard svga type? It sounds like you might need to tell windows you have a monitor capable of 1024 or higher etc.
Just a thought.

I have a very similar system to yours, and having just recenty re-load Win 98, am interested in your results. My guess is drivers for you monitor and then the TNT drivers.

Let us know how you go.

Windows 98 will not let you exceed your monitors maximum refresh rate or resolution. This is to prevent users from messing up their monitor. If your monitor is NOT correctly identified in the Monitor tab of your display settings then it will not allow you to set your display higher than the monitor identified.

Simply go to the advanced button and then the monitor tab and correctly identify your monitor. This will then allow you to set your display to any resolution and refresh rate that your monitor supports.

The latest directX is direct7a, you might want to update to this if you haven't done so, also do what Nat and d0gmA said.
