Well it seems to work here at least..

Being fed up with crashing to desktop up to 10 or 12 times in a row when trying to join a mission online i have tried a couple things to avoid it.
Apparently freeing your memory (or more truly removing SDOE from RAM) before relaunching it, seems to prevent ctd when retrying to join.
Two ways to do it:
Launch a huge app (another game...) and close it before restarting Sdoe or use a util that can free Ram like winsystem 98.

Hope it works for those to whom it also happens.

I've done this with other programs and it has worked in the past. I'll try it next time and see if it works. Thanks for reminding me of this technique...

Btw,

The only idea behind this is to reload a *clean* verson from hard drive not the *corrupted* one still in Ram.
Chain Ctd seems to happen more often on sys with lots of ram (128meg+) and good enough cpu allowing for complete reload from memory...

One of the observations I have noted is that this type of ctd occurs more frequently (for me anyway) when the number of missions in my multiplayer folder gets too high.

I often move them all out into a backup folder when the number exceeds 200. This is important for mission hosts as well. If the host has an excessive number of missions it takes longer for the game to prepare the mission lobby and if people try to join during this time they very frequently will desktop.

At one point I had put the files into a par file (it's available for download at Dogma's site or Tailslide's - it needs to be updated to include the newer planes though). This helped to improve load time but the file contained too many missions and a smaller one would be better.

Another thing that helps is to wait a few seconds before trying to enter a new mission lobby. This lets the host's system complete its set up before trying to talk to 8 incoming players at once.

I have a program called Rambooster. Clears the RAM or some such thing: is that what you are all talking about?

Yes for instance Mark.

Spin I noticed that too... and usually if I crash the first time I join, I m gonna crash several other times before it works.
Freeing memory helps connecting on the second try.
The par file is nice but its getting out of date with the missions for contest planes and all.
