I recently purchased this sim in hopes I can bring my squadron to it....but when I got to multiplayer I received a big disappointment. First and foremost...I don't see any obvious way to create your own squad in the sim. Is this possible in game and I'm just missing it or perhaps through a modification of a file? Secondly, I get online and I see NO ONE. The USA servers rarely if ever show any lobby's. Only the australian server shows up. I downloaded the following and installed it in order to meet the "online standard".

cd install
1.5 upgrade patch
planepack 53
planepack 53b
contest 1.1
and even tried the network fix file after that...

Is this sim dead or is there something wrong that prevents me from seeing people playing it?

Also is it possible to create multiple runways and bomb targets in a mission editor and set it up so one team is on 1 runway and another team is at the other and you are to protect your base from being bombed...if it's bombed you lose?

Lastly, is there no squad chat in this?

Any and all help is appreciated....

Spanky here..

What do you mean by make your own squad?

You can, just tell everyone to add the sqaud to the end of there names.

About Online, Its only at night that we really get some people online. Just cause of the # of people that play it. I'm sure if more people played it then there would be some earlier in the day.

Most people play on the cali12 server.

SDOE beeper is the best thing to see when people are online.

About the runway thing yes its totally possible to have 2 squads at one airfeild and set them up as targets.

About the chat, no unfortunatly the in game chat is to everyone in the game. BUT you can use roger wilco for squad chat or allied/axis chat.

I've looked for that beeper and haven't seen it, where's it at?

Also you don't seem to understand what I mean by a squad. A squad isn't just slapping a name on your callsign. I mean a built in squad function within the game so you can put in your own patch and plane skin, and have a password for your squadron. This way when you are in the air you are automatically set as allies...and if they had squad chat, this is how it would know who is in your squad. As for roger wilco...maybe when everyone has dsl connections. Net games are too lagged as is for voice comms.

With squadron functions you can then have squad wars. If you want a black and white example of what I mean, see Novalogics F-22 Raptor or F-22 Lightning or IBS.

I haven't seen any big listings of squadrons in this sim yet either...any links you can point me to?

As for server activity, I've looked at all hours of the day. I'm not sure what you mean by cali12 because I see usa1.alink.activision.com and usa2.alink.activision.com. Nothing about cali12.

Does anyone host this sim on a private server accessible via ip? It seems all those activision servers are nothing more then ip relays and the game itself is pier to pier.

I think there's another file you need to get with the updated server list (actually that might be the network fix file you mention), but I haven't got it yet either, so I don't remember where it is exactly Some kind soul will undoubtedly post the link shortly tho

As for the squad thing, you need to MAKE a squadron for yourself in the sim. This is not too hard. Go to the Media/Squadrons folder and open up one of the .ppf files you find there using Notepad. You'll be able to figure out what's needed to create a squad. Don't use any weird characters like dashes or slashes in the actual squad name--the online servers don't like that. Then you need to post the squad you've created so that other players can download it. You can also send it to them while waiting to fly I think.

Then you'd need to create a mission featuring your squad using the mission editor. You can't actually prevent anyone else from using your squad once they have it tho. Again, you need to either post or send the mission so that everyone has it.

You can't actually "place" runways unless you're a terrain editing guru (of which only a couple exist) but there are plenty of runways in the existing terrain at varying distances from each other, and you can set the "allegiance" of any field to be any of the 6 countries.

As for skins, you have to have a graphics program capable of editing .tif files, or converting other formats to .tif. Then you can take an existing skin and rework it into your custom squad colors. And again, you'd have to post it or send it to everyone you want to be able to see it online, i.e. your squaddies.

As for numbers, 8 usually works, and 16 is theoretically possible, so I would think that you could generate your own numbers--this isn't like F-16/MiG-29/F-22 or Warbirds where 100 guys fight it out. OTOH, you usually have less chance of having to deal with jerks, so take the good with the bad

Jedi, I'm looking in the media folder, and there is no squadrons folder within it.

I see:

aircraft
GUI
Missions
MOVIES
PIlotstats
Scramble
Training

No squadrons.... So either I'm missing an important file or I'm looking in the wrong place

Spanky here...

Pyro maybe ya should get on the active list and that way you can talk to some of us in person. Its much easier to help people out that way.

if your interested in

---------------------------------

In this game lots of the files and folders are stored in par files. So thats why you can't see the sqauds folder.

All its going to do for you is let you design missions and have your own squad to use.

Online everyone can go into that squad theres no password option, nor is there anyway to have a skin just for your squad.

lets say you were flying P51s well the skin everyone sees on the P51s will be the skin They have loaded at the time.

about the RW, actually alot of people use it with SDOE with no problems, and they are on normal 56k connections.

You can still have squad wars with SDOE as a matter of fact I think it would be the strong point of the game if we could get more squads to fly. You just can't password protect your squad or have squad skins unless you set it up with the opposing squad to trade skins before the game.
