you'll get it in a few weeks when the new Pacific terrain comes out and the new verison of the Ki-61 is released. then you just take the F4U's and the Zero and you have a pacific SDOE. the Dauntless is still in th works so that's another plane to add to the ever growing list.------------------

SDOE Pacific Version?? Yep, the ppl that payed for the game are working on it as we speak, the terrain is fully textured by an excellent artist and the terrain model is well under way (being worked on by and adequate modeler)... where do I get this "inside" information you ask... IP: Logged |

Seems to me we oughta just "sell" our Pacific planes and terrain to Inertia. We've done all the work for 'em OK, OK I'll "trade" my plane for a free copy of the sim, how bout that? Hmmm. Wonder if I can "copyright" the OpenPlane Corsair? Might make for some interesting negotiations concerning SOS, no? ------------------ --jedi--

infact, thinking about it, since Diego and I are working on Midway, I think it'd be a good idea for some one /team to start on another Pacific region, so, on that point, anyone SERIOUSLY wanting to start a terrain of the region to add along with Midway, contact me and I will pass on what I know.I do mean serious people only, it's not hard, but it's fidly and laborious, but if your willing, I'll set you off and running. ~Nat~ PS, there are still some things that we are going to need alot of help with on Midway, but we will requier someone with very good OPS and asc file knowledge.. apply within Oh a final thing... Wouldn't it be Too Fucking Cool if we beat them to SDOE Pacific.. LMAO, going off SDOE, we only need 3 terrains and at most 12 aircraft, we got most of the aircraft finished or underway already, and 1 terrain midway through.. yeah.. lets do it.. lol [This message has been edited by Nat (edited 05-18-2000).] IP: Logged |

Depends.... Is OpenPlane viewed as a programming language? But whatever you built would need to be 100% from scratch. Also you better have a *really* good lawyer (one that costs about 3 times any award you could expect to collect on). Then _maybe_ you would have a chance.... Nahhh

I'm not trying to sound cynical but if there is another sim. comming out that is basically a rehash of what we have going on here you would definitely be doing yourself a favor to protect your work in any way possible.A lot of the work done here would basically fall into the arts and entertainment catagory. All the modelling, the skins, the terrains, everything falls under 3D graphics. A good lawyer could even argue that all the number crunching of the FM's is part of that also. 3D graphics is definitely considered an art field and not a computer field or program like Windows. The laws protecting the arts are not nearly as strict as those in other fields. Any of you that have worked in any art field should know about "APPROPRIATED ART". What that means (for those of you who don't know) is basically legally stolen art. Meaning, I can take Jedi's Corsair (for example) do a little work on the wireframe, fix up the cockpit a little, slap on a new skin, maybe tweak the FM a little, copywrite it in my name and sell it. Unfortunately there would be little or nothing he could do because of "appropriated art". You can change as little as 10% of the original piece if I remember right. If any of you have ever seen that picture of the Mona Lisa with a moustache that is your prime example. Having worked in printmaking I am somewhat familiar with this stuff. I also did an internship with a small gaming company and one of the biggest problems/worries is copywrite infringement. Every company in the field has all their employees sign thick non-disclosure agreements. You would think this stuff was top secret, well to them it is. I'm NOT saying MH would ever do this, but if you think some other lazy bastard put to the task of creating a Midway terrain and maybe a Corsair and a Hellcat to go with it knew where he could DL(HIJACK) everything he needed wouldn't do it you're only kidding yourself. It happens all the time. Thats why these laws exist. The only thing in our favor would be beating them to the punch and having a Pacific theatre already available therefore rendering theirs useless. I'm not trying to cast a shadow over our happy little world and am personally anxoiusly waiting for pacific terrains. If you guys working on them should recieve a cease and desist order one sunny day. Be aware of your rights. Remember, WE do this for LOVE, THEY do this for MONEY. IP: Logged |

OK, lets work through some Midway Q and A's1. (sorry Diego) My terrain looks a little different, more Pacific blue, and yes, it looks good close up, and does Diegos. 2. Those are just painted on airstrips. 3. Yes I will be trying every trick I and everyone else can show me to get 2 working airfields on Midway, I don't want this kick ass work by Diego to be wasted on a terrain that we have to start in the air. 3. Currently we only have plans for the Midway airstrips, I've looked into have placeable AI usable aircraft carriers as airstrips.. no go though (not hat I can see) 4. Yes it would be possible to have 1 or 2 "fixed" aircraft carriers that are useable airstrips. No I don't know how to do this, I can't see what defines the dierection of and airstrip, and therefore can't add that to a fixed carrier. Also though, this harks back to the problem I'm going to have with actually placing the airstrips, in that - I need to find out exactly how to place them at a certain point and certain altitude. 5.... ?? er.. dunno, you ask us this one yerselves.. lol Again, this isn't a fast process.. it's very tedious, and we are going to need some help with it, which I don't mind at all, cause I fully second what Diego said, we're not doing this just for us, it's for everyone here, because we can do it, and because we want it. I'm hoping that enough other ppl will want it aswell, then we'll get that help that I know will be needed to finish this in the next few weeks. ~Nat~ PS.. Aaahhh Diego, I see you did get the updated SM file then.. lol IP: Logged |

Sorry Spanky, missed your Q about the water... OK, this one is easy.. LOL, alot of the water is still land, and you can set down on it. Don't worry, it wont be staying that way, I already know how to alter full tiles from land to water, it's on the list as "low Priority", yes low.. LOL, because I know how to do it it goes to the bottom, and because it's the second most tedious thing that needs doing Again, it's because of this that I really need some one that can write Batch files!!!!!!!!!! Is there no one out there that can write a simple batch file for me, I've asked 4 times now and never got a response (OK, I know you did Spanky ) I need a batch file Damit!! Jeez, no wonder people think alien abductions are real.Don't you think it's just a little bit silly to sit around speculating that we're planning on stealing your work? Just for the record, we have no current plans to use any community-made art in any upcoming sims (pacific or otherwise) and if we do decide to do that, you can count on that we'll do it with the authors consent or not at all. I can't help but imagine that Inertia doing a pacific theater would be nothing but a good thing for all interested. I would love if they were doing a WWI sim! That way WWI features would be added to OpenPlane! That would mean I could make better enhancements So there may be duplication... I know they would not "steal" anyone's work. Any artists wants to start their creation from scratch anyway, lazy or not. We hard;y use the shipping aircraft anymore, not that they were bad, but this is the nature of an open sim. So you could get real torpedos! Real moving ships! How would this not be dream come true?

Just my two cents here. I am looking forward to a Pacific theater. The thing is, it is still the same sim with a different background. If there is to be an SDOP, I would think it would be a better seller than an RC sim. I don't know what this RC sim is going to be but, it brings to mind standing there watching a little RC plane flying around. If this is the case, I think I will pass. Now if I could get my hands on a game with Carriers that move, pitch, and roll, I would snap it up in a heart beat. I may be way off base here but, IMHO, efforts are being waisted on a very limited market project. Please drop some kowledge on me. Prop out IP: Logged |

Face it the RC Sim is going to have a completely different market (for the most part) than SDOE. Chances are you will never see it available at CompUSA or such. However, if a person spends a lot of money flying RC planes, (and some people spend a *lot*) plus are into designing their own planes, they can use this to get a feel for how an aircraft would fly before they spend the time and money doing it. I can see how flying clubs would also us this a means of training for new pilots. A waste of time and resources? Depends on how well it is received in that market (and who's opinion you are looking at...) BTW - I will agree with sv that no ones planes would be stolen. That would end the future of the new sim as well as the old one. The market tends to be very unforgiving about such things....

Mad Dog here... I don't know if this has all been said in a simi-joking manner or not, but worrying about copyrights and saying stuff like "The only thing in our favor would be beating them to the punch and having a Pacific theatre already available therefore rendering theirs useless." is completely blowing my mind! Before you get your panties in a bunch, I want to make it clear that this is in NO way a personal attack on ya BULLET, it's just that in my eyes, thats a retarded way to look at things. You said it yourself that we do it for love, they do it for money. While this might not be entirely true across the board, I hear what you are saying. Activision was deffinately in it for the money, Parasoft was in it to produce (with some degree of love) a satisfactory piece of software. Which they did. For money.
...but why would beating them to the punch on a pacific theatre render a whole new game useless? Besides, the Pacific sim is a long ways off, even if it takes half the time it is taking to make "the patch". What would SDOE have become if anyone were to sue anyone else over it? I 100% doubt that anything user-made would be pilfered without permission. But even if they did...what are you going to do? Sue? Why the hell would you do that? Sure it would be rude, and possibly unethical, but is it worth even breaking a sweat over? C'mon people, get a grip. Lets play the game, and leave the game-playing to Activision. BTW, the elbows on my shirt are wearing out....I think I need a >PATCH< !!!!! ------------------ -Seperated and independant halves of a genius super-organism who believe that no game will ever satisfy them completely.

Hehe I was just kidding (mostly). Since the Corsair started out life as the Mustang, who's stealing from who anyway? I'd give it to em just for a mention in the credits somewhere, or alpha tester privs or something (but I'll deny I said this...)As for the CVs, Air Warrior has done OK with "static" CVs for a long time. To an airplane, ALL ships are pretty much "static" anyway, but Pete Hawk knows how to make em move around some, so I'd pick his brain on this one. Also, I have a mission that was sent to me in the Corsair training section that starts out with a Corsair on the deck of the carrier (Saratoga), so it must be possible to use the CV as an airfield "like" object. Seems like there should be a way to put Task Forces out there at the fringe of the terrain. Of course the size of the terrains and the weirdness at the edges kinda messes up the concept of a CV battle a bit... ------------------ --jedi-- IP: Logged |

I know it's been said before, but that Midway terrain is looking really SWEET!I'm a little confused now though... are there two different Midway terrains? (Nat's and Diego's) I think MH is the key to figuring out the airfield thing. If it can't be figured out by looking at the terrains we have with working airfields, maybe MH can give you an inside scoop on how it works. We could get maybe an air strip or two, and I think the carrier thing could be done... by replacing the airfield model with the ship once you have a working airfield. I'm not sure if it's that great of an idea though, just think about the fact that those ships will *always* be there. Placeable carriers that you could start on... now THAT would kick ass. That would probably require a change in the game engine or at least the mission editor though. Did I mention that new terrain is looking really nice? ------------------ -=TheReaper=-

You have to admit that if this community produces its own Pacific theatre for free, you are going to have a hell of a time selling one to anyone who knows anything about this sim. Why pay for what you can get for free. In the real world business is business and investors and lawyers don't give a shit about the greater happiness of the SDOE community. I used to work for Imagination Works. If they are not out of business then they are damn close. All because one of the head programmers took some "top secret"info. to his new job with the competition. Next thing you know lawyers are everywhere screaming about breech of contract and broken NDA's etc...The bottom line was the competitor of the firm we were working for was gonna release their game first. Same game, slightly improved, different title. It was one of those stupid shoot'em up games if I could remember the title I'd tell you.
