I have a small problem here. The P-47d comes with 3 cockpits... the idea being that users decide which cockpit to use. Now, if people install the P-47d via plane pack, are they going to have access to the P-47d folder so they can switch cockpits?

Can't resist sticking my nose in...

If the plane pack is in a parfile, that makes any given plane sort of inaccessible to the average guy, but you can always add a folder to the Media/Aircraft/P47d folder with extras, and the sim will "read" the add-ons, right? And as long as you don't change the P47d.sm file, the plane still works online, right?

So maybe keep the cockpit files as separate .sm files, outside the parfile, and release them as an "optional upgrade" zipfile. All it would need to contain is the media/aircraft/p47d folder with the cockpit.sm files in there. You wouldn't even need to put out a new plane when you update the cockpit that way--I think?

I would have replied earlier but there was a bug in the jug and I had to fix it!!!! LOL

The standard is in the parfile so if you just want the high detail no reflection cockpit you don't need anything in the P47D directory.

I have the installer installing all 3 files in the P47D directory so they are there to be renamed by the end user if they want. I also have the installer prompt you which one to use and install the appropriate one also.

Hey dOgmA,

How about setting up a seperate section on simFiles where users can get each individual zip files that contain the exact same aircraft as in the .par files? Say a person just wants to try out the Hurricane or something by itself. Maybe they dont want to download the whole large Plane Pack. They could just download the Hurricane by itself. It would contain the same exact airplane as the Plane Pack, so there would be no online chaos.

My whole reasoning for this idea is that often, I want to get just a certain plane...the Zero for instance...so I can paint it, and I don't want the hassle of having the Unbig it and sort through 15 megs of stuff I don't want. Maybe its a little selfish, but some of us download planes for different reasons

Just my nickle.

Though i am against single download planes that are available in the plane packs, I am not going to stop plane authors from uploading their plane to SimFiles. I may police the site and remove outdated planes like the corsairs that are there now will be obsolete once the contest pack is out tomorrow, while the zero and wildcat will still be compatible.

As an alternate solution however, I think it might be better to just contact the author and tell them your intentions and have them provide you with the apropriate files for creating skins. That would make the indevidual plane less accessable and less prone to end up flown online.

My next project is a versioning system similar to Source Safe or CVS that will help keep things a little more organized. I wouldn't be opposed to at least hear a argument for having an access level that would allow read only access to the planes for skinners.

Could you have an install program that gives the option to install a plane or not, like a menu selection, for people like Dan who don't want to install the entire pack?

You would still have to download the entire pack but maybe leave it on your drive and run the install program each time you wanted to intall a different plane.

I asked much the same question about a separate release of new Jug. I realize that the whole purpose of the plane pack is on-line compatability but if there were truly a "single source" site for on-line aircraft that is "cleaned" (older versions replaced by the newer planepack versions then it shouldn't make a difference if you loaded a single zip filed aircraft or the whole planepack. The trick is that people would need to make there downloads from that single site and the site would have to be keep up to date and advertized as the sole site for on-line aircraft.

Who am I kidding.....people being people - it would still end up with on-line mismatches!
forget I mentioned it.

Actually it does make a huge difference. I hate to get into what could end up as an arguement but every night i have someone join my missions that say Contest Plane Pack Testing that don't have a single contest plane and ask me to chnage to a mission that they have so they can fly too. Imagine trying to find a mission that has only the zero and not the corsair. Back to square one.
