When processor speed doubles that's my cue to purchase a new CPU, Motherboard, and cooling system. I was looking around the net and found a GREAT deal through the VoodooExtreme website and from GenXTech Computers. Comes with FREE Fed Ex shipping! Here's the link: http://www.genxtechcomp.com/voodooextreme.htm What it is is an Intel Celeron 566 running @ 935 MHz with Golden Orb, IWILL Slotket, and Abit VT6X4 MB for JUST $365! It IS overclocked but they guarantee it to run that fast for a year! I am already an overclocker at heart who has now been running an Intel Celeron 300A @ 450 MHz for the past 2 years now with NO problems. I say PHOOEY to people who think it's dangerous. It's NOT as long as you use your brain and have plenty of case cooling inside. My current system being a prime example. Anyhow this is the one I'm eyeing and hope to have it within a month or two. I'll keep you guys posted. [This message has been edited by Pete Hawk (edited 05-13-2000).] IP: Logged |

I'm currently running my Celeron 566 at 850 MHz--so far, so good. Already had an Abit BH-6 MB, so only needed the CPU, Abit Slotket, and a big ol' CPU fan. Total cost: $200. The BH-6 has a "turbo" setting that may get me another 25 MHz or so, but haven't tried that yet...

Interesting Jedi! I have the Abit BH6 also, so maybe I should go that route as well. No other odd-ball changes to do? Just get those components and it's fairly painless to setup?I did hear a mention of strange bus settings, and if I got this new rig I wouldn't have to worry about all that stuff. Thanks for any more info. [This message has been edited by Pete Hawk (edited 05-13-2000).] IP: Logged |

So I guess no one else is around the 1 Ghz speed range yet either?IP: Logged |

It was pretty painless. You need to have the Nov99 Bios update for the BH-6 board, so that you get the right clock multiplier (8.5 x 100Mhz) and the voltage is set to 1.6 in the setup software. The slotket is the Abit part, so it works fine with the board, but you have to set the manual jumpers on the slotket (which took about 5 minutes) I have two case fans in my case, and opted for the largest CPU fan they offered, but no "active" cooling has been required. Mine booted up and ran at 850 the first time I tried it (after setting all the settings in the SoftMenu thing of course) and has run all day several times at about 35 degrees C (warm, but not excessive IMO). I got mine at www.allstarshop.com Here's an article discussing the upgrade... http://www.firingsquad.com/hardware/bh6celeron2/

Thanks! That's a big help Jedi. Btw, a friend of mine got the 550E and told me to do the same. I'm not sure of what all the benefits were but he said just to do it, as I'd be better off.[This message has been edited by Pete Hawk (edited 05-15-2000).] IP: Logged |

Where would be a good place online to get general info about over-clocking, maybe a utility that tests ones harddrive to see what speed it is capable of? Thanks 4 any ideas.IP: Logged |

Try www.anandtech.com They have a whole section on overclocking, IIRC...------------------ --jedi-- IP: Logged |

Hey guys, I have a Compaq PIII 500 and want to overclock. But I gotta a prob, I dont know what kinda MB I have. I called Compaq and all they could tell me was that its based on an Intel 810 chip set. They have their name on it and not the primary manufac. I`ve posted several msg`s on the Compaq forum but have had no reply. Does anyone know what the MB is in a 5690 Compaq? Plus the BIOS have limited things you can actually change. Better yet has anyone overclocked a Compaq? Any info would be appreciated. S!IP: Logged |
