Spanky here..

Ok 2 part and off topic but I needed some opinions and this is the only forum most people visit.

I'm in a panic ok

K so I mentioned last night online that my CPU fan was being noisy, and I was thinking that might me that its going to fail soon.

BOY WAS I WRONG

Turns out I was in there this morning and its my hard drive. Its got a high pitched sound to it. Even when its just sitting there. Its not only when i access it, but all the time.

SOOoo... I'm guessing its about to give up soon? or what?

Really it doesn't matter, It has to be replaced cause the noise gives me a headache and its only 3 gigs which is pretty small these days.

I'm going to back up onto CDRW today and I have a 1gig that I can use. Can you imagine that? A 1! GIG!!!!. LOL

Just enough space for win98 and SDOE LOL.

So onto the next problem.

I wanted to swap my 266 cpu for that 333 that siggi nicely gave me. It turns out this board will run a 333. Under a reserved jumper setting.

So I poped it in with out the Fan since I didn't have one just to make sure it booted and played about 15 secs of SDOE to see the FPS (A leettle higher) and shut her down.

THen i pulled out the allen keys and pulled the sink/fan off the 266.

WELL. It comes off but the paste is dry and the screws are striped.

So they wouldn't tread into teh other CPU cause there is no threads in the holes on the CPU.

I got it on as best as I could. and its running. HEHEH. Wondering how long for.

So if I buy a cheap fan like this:

Ball bearing cooling fan for Intel Slot 1 Katami & Coppermine processors up to 750MHz.
3 Pin motherboard connector.
1 Year Warranty.
$12.99

How does it go on? It looks identical to the one I have now. Maybe I just need some new screws? It seems to me that making new threads with the screws could give off little slivers of alum from the CPU and I can't see that being good.

I don't need somthing crazy for overclocking, since this is as fast at this board goes. But I just want somthing that works.

My SDOE folder started out at 400something MB's. Now, with all addons except the Corsair pack and SnowyDover, it's 750!!

The fan your picture shows is for Pentium II class processors and above. The CPU goes INSIDE that little box, and the fan itself plugs into a specific connector on the MB. For a 266/333 processor, you want something that clamps right down onto the CPU. There should be 2 little square tabs on the CPU mounting plate on the MB. You should be able to find a fan with a heatsink attached to it that will clip onto the tabs at Comp USA or Best Buy or even WalMart maybe.

Spanky,

I had hte same thing happen to my HD some time back. It began to "squal" and soon after my computer started doing some strange things. It got to the point that my unit would loose icons from DT and a lot of "System Errors" I had to take the unit to "Zero" and lost everything in my computer. And had to replace the hard drive, $$$$$$$
I suggest you backup your system files now!
And spare yourself the shit I had to contend with...

If you're putting on a new heatsink you want to gob on some thermal compound where it contacts the cpu.

Ditto what Psi said.. whenever I have drives get noisy like that it's just a matter of time before they go.

Semmern Yeah it does get large eh?

Might need to borrow a small 400 that a freind has just to keep a couple other programs.

Thank god i have enough ram that i don't need a huge virtual ram disk

jedi, yeah i guess I'll start looking around for somthing.

Psi yeah well I don't have any desktop icons, so i wouldn't get that warning LOL

It will probly die though

Tail, yeah I would put on some fresh thermal paste But radio shack doesn't carry it anymore.

I don't know if theres another electronics place in town. Some of the local computer stores are just horrible. I couldn't even get some stand offs from one store. Cause they don't build there own. I wonder what they do if they do a motherboard change for someone?

So a new/better fan and a new HD.
That sucks ass.

I really have no money to do that right now. I guess the phone bill will get pushed back again HAAHHAHAHHAHHAA

Well I just did a scan disk and a defrag that took about 2 hours so it must have alittle life in it and the heat with the cpu must be ok cause it should lock if it isn't getting enough cooling.

Now i'm going to let it play some SDOE by itself and see how that goes.

Well I went and ordered a new HD should be in tommorow

$206 canadian tax in for a 10.2 gig 7200 rpm

Should be a nice change from my vintage 3 gig.

I know you can get larger ones for just a bit more but Thats really all I had and i wanted a 7200 more then a couple extra gigs.

Plus like I said thats canadian money

Cool Spanky, now you just watch how quickly that vanishes when you extract all the par files into one folder to tinker with, have 3 or 4 different folders with exported obj files in them with vage names to what you're doing with them.. etc etc etc.. LOL I've lost over a gig since doing that stuff

K, related questions. What is best for a cpu fan in terms of space behind the box? I've got a nice setup here but no cash if something craps out so I'm a little nervous. Also, how far should speakers be from monitors?

What do you mean By space behind the box?

If you arn't overclocking then I don't think cpu fan choice is to big. If ya have one that came with the cpu and its not locking up on ya then it should be fine. Plus they are cheap to replace.

Bout the speakers. Well most are sheilded.
and you CAN'T sheild speakers yourself if there not.

If you move them slowly towards the monitor and you see any discoloration on the screen then your too close. I would move them away till they didn't do that plus a bit more.

Be VERY carefull if they arn't cause that discoloration can stay.
