... going to waste. Why not use it to store links to downloads? Almost everybody who comes here looking for downloads gets utterly confused.
UBB is an excellent way of organizing information. Why not have the "Downloads" section here link directly to the old board and have the old board organized like this...

By using the UBB as a sort of nexus for downloads and links to websites, we can also promote the use of all the SDOE websites out there.... Furthermore, we don't have to fight over where the centralized site should be or what it should look like... Everybody wins!

I know I've posted this before, but I hate seeing people confused about where to find stuff.

Pretty darn good idea! Individual builders could then update their own links and post announcements in a conspicuous place, and the guys who post the new stuff on their sites can keep abreast of what's current.

There will always be a big plane pack of "stable" planes, and a big blob of new planes in various stages of development. It's only natural for the new planes to generate interest and be used (excessively) online when they first appear. A good information "clearinghouse" would help a lot in keeping everyone up-to-date on the current versions.

Spanky here...

I really don't see why when we have simfiles

You upload (ie you DON'T need your own web space)

Anyone can download.

It keeps stats of how many times its been downloaded.

Its organized

AND it emails anyone on a list with a small notice that theres new stuff up. and what it is.

www.3dgw.com/simfiles

works great

Spanky,

My problem is with the Downloads section here, not Simfiles. I just think that there needs to be a place HERE that contains categorized links to everything (the emphasis is on categorized) since everyone tends to come here first.

In fact, I would have no problem with Simfiles being the main place to find files and/or links to files as long as it was categorized and as long as the Downloads section link HERE goes directly to the Simfiles page.

That's why I think the UBB style is a perfect medium for this... If people WANT to store their files at Simfiles, they can... but, if they want to store their files at their own website they can do that too... the UBB would only serve to provide a link to where the file is. People could either link to the file stored on their own personal websites or they could link to the file stored at Simfiles.

Either way, it wouldn't have to be UBB necessarily... I'm just saying UBB style. It's something we can all agree on.

Spanky here..

Thats why I have been asking FOREVER for a page like simfiles to be right on this server
right in the menu with the other stuff.

Then when you come to www.fightersquadron.com
there will be a little news listing that auto updates when there is new uploads.

I always come to www.fightersquadron.com Not right to this forum cause my favorites folder is all messed right now.

I guess most of you havn't seen that page in months. well its pretty out of date. Some poeple never go to message boards so they would see that first page hasn't been updated forever and possibly just leave. Not knowing all the stuff going. We have to expand outside of this forum and get some news posted every day. That would help alot in my opinion

I agree with you guys that this place is getting very out of date. However, I'm a lazy bum who doesn't want the work of keeping it up to date, so I guess I shouldn't complain either. I still wonder when Inertia is going to change the RC simulator's "Screenshot of the week" to the "Screenshot of every 2 or 3 months". It is kind of funny actually. I can't imagine being willing to let the public side of my work fall into such disrepair if I were a game programmer, but then, I'm not.

Anyhow, I'd LOVE to see a new, organized, comprehensive downloads section. Last night I flew online for the first time in about a year, and it was a pain trying to run down everything that I need to be kosher with the boys.

cheers,
charm

That's a very good idea spanky (as I've said before). What I need is a volunteer to keep those links updated. I've asked for that in the past and if I've gotten any takers, I've missed it.

If you want to volunteer, please email me.
