Today, on May 4th, we in Holland commemorate the casualties of World War 2.

Ash,

My uncle, killed on 22 Jun 43 is buried in Holland. Do they do anything at the war graves?

Check out my Dedication page to my uncle at my site http://free.prohosting.com/~kopper/dedicate.htm

Nice site Kopper,
And a well deserved honor to your uncle and his crew. May God bless them all.
Im going to an airshow in the morning that has several warbirds. As I stand there looking at these aircraft, I can't help but think of the men that flew them and what they went through.
I somehow just can't see people today having the will and determination to undergo that hardship. Its a sad state of affairs in many ways.
As I said, God bless them all.

Yeah, nice page Kopper. Your uncle was a brave man! He fought for our freedom. I promise you I'll check out on the grave sometime this summer if you like me to do so. ;-)))

Take care,

Ash

I saw a news report on the CBC about the parade in Apeldoorn for the Canadian Veterans, and after hearing some of the comments from Dutch children I have to say I'm proud to be Canadian, and I just wish that our schools would put more emphasis on what happened during the war. Recognizing Remembrance Day for people our age has become something akin to 'going through the motions' and little more. It is a shame, a crime even, and I don't know if it will change before it's too late. I have a lot of respect for the Dutch, I hope one day to visit.

Werner

When I first started my research on 429 sqn over a year ago, my wife asked why I was doing it. She said no one cares, why should we care, forget about it!

Three weeks ago she told me why she felt it was important for us to remember the wars and the sacrifices. She learned about all of this just from watching the research I was doing. I won one person over without saying a word about it! Go figure??

Kopper,

Your remark about your wife reminds me of a simliar situation that I had with mine.

A couple of years ago we went to France for vacation. Being a WWII buff since I was a kid, I talked her into going to Normandy under the pretense of "the beautiful countryside". Well, she saw through that and knew it was the WWII events in that area that I was interested in. Instead of giving me a hard time, she took it upon herself to learn about D-Day so she could understand what happened in that region. She now has a great respect and appreciation for the sacrifices that the young men of the world gave for our freedom. She's even mentioned that we need to go back to Normandy someday with the kids! Afterall, if we don't pass on what we know to the future generations, who will?

Keep up the good work!

G-man

Welcome to: "Memorial day" ... "4th of July" ... etc. ... here in the US.

Basicly nothing more than days-off and excuses to grill out.

sad ...

In Holland we have it this way:
On the 4th of May we have rememberance day, including a big ceremony in Amsterdam at the WW2 monument on "de Dam" with the Queen, Prime Minister, etc, including 2 minutes of total silence everywhere in Holland, and several other smaller ceremonies throughout Holland.
Then, on the 5th of May, it's a celebration day to celebrate our freedom, and that's just a day off to party and for "excuses to grill out".

There are discussions every year if we should go on with remembering WW2 after 55 years now, but I think it would be very unwise to stop this. We would just forget how lucky we actually are to have freedom and how much trouble people went through to get it for us.

Spanky here....

I would say that since I have started playing this and reading more about WW2. I have a whole new respect for the people who fight in wars.

I would say that we can't stop holding a day to remember. BUT

Thats not enough. Most of the people I know don't really care and do see it as nothing.

We don't get the day off here though.

Anyway. I think we need MORE. Most people just don't realize how awful war is. They know people die but they don't realize how they die or what happens to the people who live.

The fact that we are barly taught anything besides some stats and dates in school is INSANE.

We should have to read what it is really like, only that will give us respect for the the fallen.

I'm wondering besides showing up what I can do for next Nov 11th. Maybe some day I will have a ww2 replica so I can do a fly over at the ceremonys
