OK, I've been sat on the new Pacific terrain for a couple of weeks now, not really knowing what to do with it, so I want so Realistic replies as to what you would want on a Pacific Terrain.. here's what I have now..

Fully mapped terrain with 1 single Island (Malta) with working AI airstrip, some mods to the island altering the elevation and form of mountains.

Rest is water.

Idea (can do this).. Placeable islands via Mission Editor.

I'm thinking of re working the terrain and building another island with usable airstrip in the bottom left (opposite corner from Malta) and maybe a dash of small islands through the terrain.

Please list any thought's or ideas, plus if anyone would seriously like to work with me on this to add more or perfect what I can do, let me know.

Please guys, keep the ideas realistic, I'm not an expert at this LOL

I want to be able to fly through valley's and such. Wouldn't it be cool to have dog fights like that?

your in pursuit of someone they go into the valley for cover and you follow them in only to find out staying away from the valley walls take more concentration than it is to shoot I guess it's not the most realistic, but it would be cool in my opinion.

sorry, don't have many ideas right now

Hey Nat you know how I feel about a new MED terrain count me in! Malta is a ROCK with a natural harbor that would be awesome to model. If you can do it, I'm in.

Nat, the water is water right? Not land painted to be water? And the water... is it flat and pacific looking?

Hey Nat, nice work! A couple things:

1. If you're doing pacific, please do a complete island chain, not miscellaneous "Looks Pacific" mish-mash stuff.

2. If you're doing the med, please ensure Hydrographical, Architectural and Topographical Accuracy! Our current Malta annoys me to no end...

Go Nat Go!

Zool, I've been considering just completely re-working the Rhineland terrain to make a whole terrain something like you want, lots of tight valleys and mountain passes, thing is, if I stretch the terrain too much the texture really gets draged all over, but I haven't tried re texturing the altered tile yet, so it could look OK. There's alot of work in doing something like that, but it's fairly easy stuff, just tedious, so I'd like to work a fantasy terrain like that yes.

Argon, the water is water, and flat, I posted in Tech to Hippie about his Lodhac prog that can do this (change material values) and he's shown me what to do, so.. although the tiles that were previously land still actually need the material value altering with LODhac, yes, the water is/will be water, looks like pacific water.. and if you try to land on it, will feel like it aswell.. LOL

Werner.. very good point, I'll look up some Pacific maps to see which one would leave the least work.. I say this because as I said, I'm not brilliant and the "fine tuning" so the less to do the better (and because it's tedious work it'll keep my interest longer.. need a good kick sometimes to get it going)

Diego, my first priority is to get a good Pacific terrain, I'm sure you wont mind me telling the others here that the pics you showed me of the Island you did is wicked, love the underwater reef detail

Spanky here..

Yeah Island chain would be VERY cool.

I'm also interested in some canyons but I would rather a pac map right now.

I don't care if its based on real islands as long as i feel like i'm in the pacific

Nat, Can you use you ability to add airstrips to add the property to the deck of a Carrier. Even if the Carrier was stationary (Made like an island with an airstrip - but looks like a carrier) in a corner somewhere. This would make it much easier to create missions.

Maybe you could have the island chain on the left, with a Japanise carrier on the top right and US carrier on the bottom right.

It would be even better if you could add it on a placeable carrier or moving carrier (ala Pete), but I know this is already asking for a lot.

I wish you luck. I hope this works out.

Nat,

if you're really considering redoing the Rhineland please drop me a mail. I've had the same thing in mind, but less by modelling, but rather converting a DEM (if I try hard enough I might get a converter together).

I hope it looks good down low. The new Somme terrain is great from altitude but looses definition on the ground. The out-of-the-box terrains look great from both.

/me rubs eyes
yawn

How hard would it be to stretch a current terrain out...turning a 40x40km one into a 200x200km one, although misproportioned?

Razer, that could help, aint had much luck finding aerial shots of the area.. it'll take some work to re-shape the islands, but hell, wtf lol A good Tif is the start of the terrain anyways, no point in making islands if you aint got a pic atleast to give you an idea of the shape, so sure, when you're done give me a shout and I'll have a go at building the terrain under it, it's just moving alot of vertices thats all.

Raider, it is possible, but not for me right now, I'm not advanced enough yet to quiet get a grip of putting an airstrip on a Carrier, I'm very sure that ppl more advanced in OPS and SM work could do it though.

As for adding working airstrips as placeable objects.. I don't think it can be done, the problem comes in Mission Editor, I can't see how to have the models airstrip added to the list of available airstrips (understand?) and without that.. yer buggered

Roy.. yes I am thinking about re doing Rhineland, but mainly as a battle terrain, gorges, tight canyons etc, some things to fly and fight through for good fun rather than realistic terrian, but that wil be after the Pacific is finished, least then I'll have learnt more and be able to apply it better to that terrain then.

Jerry, I do my best with the textures to keep them sharp at low altitude, it's tedous but worth it, just means you have to zoom right in and make sure whats been done hasn't blurred.

Why can't you use multiple LODs for the terrain to make it look good far away, and switch in to look good close too? Is the terrain model different from a regular plane model? Or is it just too much of a pain in the butt?

As for what I'd want from a terrain: I also just like the idea of having an island chain. I don't care if its realistic, but why not, since it will please more people.

I would also be interested in seeing if a more complex city could be added to a map (more buildings/houses)... and I'd love to see a China/Burma terrain, with those tall mountains rising up out of Guilin. Of course we'd need the P40 and some Japanese bombers for that... I've heard the Chinese were flying some I-16s, but pretty much got beat around by the Japanese.

Lods might help FR when at high altitude, but other than that, not much else, the texture has to be done well so as not to blur close up, it's a pain, but thats all, it just means working at high zoom levels so you can see if something gets blured and sharpen it.

The idea of better towns is actually a good one, and a very easy one aswell.. certainly no harder than those little trees I did, they wouldn't be "awsome" but maybe better

Mountains I can do easily, on my Pacific terrain I have a little volcano (re-worked since last pic posted).

The problem still is... the terrain starts to look jagged when I draw it up into mountains, I'm still learning Max, so I'm not entirely sure on how to smooth these out, thats why I've previously tried to recruit a little team of people to assist on this, all the big parts I can do myself, but the small refinements such as smoothing I'm not very good at.

Diego is going to be working with me on this, he has terrain experience and the step from texturing to terrain building is a very small one.. and from what he's shown me in the past.. he can do some wicked texturing

Still, if anyone with Max experience would like to assist, I'm open to offers
