I posted this earlier on another thread and was curious as to what you guys thought:Heya... I was just thinking in the shower a few minutes ago about a post by Meatwater I saw at the B-17II forum (Spanky- check out downloads at www.bombs-away.net for the sounds)- and remember when he was going to do a second sound-pack for SDOE. Since that time he has been swamped by offers from other games and was getting paid to do it! So-- maye there's a way to get an amount of $ (I'm willing to put some in if I can scrape some together) from the uswers here to "hire" Meatwater to add-on some sounds- like for the guns, rockets, bombs, flaps, etc...and for some of the new planes that don't have custom engines. I mean we had a pool for the contest and got a great number of new planes-- maybe by doing this, we can continue to improve the game to our liking...and later "if" we ever get OpenSource- do the same for that select group so they have a little incentive to work on that (although if that is ever released, I have a feeling for most here, that would be incentive enough ) ------------------ Brought to you by the campaign for a better Dauntless!

Spanky here.. Ok I just took a listen to the sounds there. I will be honest that i only listed to the RM and wav versions of the p51d start up sound. I am VERY unimpressed. If those are to be used in the game I will have to turn it of or replace them right away. I'll check out the B17 Those must just be for our listening pleasure, there is no way they could be planing on using those in the sim.

Yeah, I downloaded Meatwaters sounds too. They were in my opinion very so-so. Some were good, some were bad. I especially liked the P-38 sound, but the B-17 was horrible. Some sounded like a keyboard's lowest notes on full reverb. Anyways, I've kept a few of them and added some of my own made (DB605 and Merlin) and now I feel I have adequate sound. If ya read my post on sounds in B17-2 on their forum, you've pretty much gotten the idea that I'm thinking we're being taken for a ride soundwise. That was because the sound clips they so proudly advertised were loops right off the same Mustang sound CD i have. No modifications of any kind to it, just copied and pasted onto the video. Present accounts from those guys who were there viewing the actual game leads me to believe that we do have something in store for us soundwise. But I think just copying and pasting sound and trying to pass it off as in-game sound is reprehensible.IP: Logged |

Spanky here... K well at least i'm not the only sound critic. I really don't see why with all these museums that have flying planes, that it should be hard to get some good sounds for the games. It maybe be expensive to do. Sending a guy on the road for a couple months with an expensive portable recorder and the training to use it. BUT boy would it pay off. Also I hate the way those cool shows on discovery and other shows, show a plane starting up but then start playing music or talking over it. I want to hear the plane, not some dumb ass. Tell me what you want AFTER ya let me hear it. Maybe while its flying around and your playing that cheezy 80s techno. K I have a sound that I got of a MONO low quality VHS tape. I had to cut it early cause the bastard started talking. and theres hiss because of the VCR (not mine) used.
Its been converted to stereo but thats it. Use it if ya like but its a little hissy for my tastes. Maybe someone can edit it a bit. When I tried to take the his off It took away too much of the high end. Its a P51 racer starting up. www.thot.net/~verge/showoff/p51vhs.wav IP: Logged |

SPanky here.. Oh yeah. I have a lanc starting up and a b29 starting up on a much better tape around here somewhere that i may convert. I could have had a great Spit start up too. but again someone started talking. I almost had an AMAZING swordfish startup sound. NO talking and all the sound right from first crank to smooth running. Just missed it though. I was so pissed.

Spanky, does it bother you like it bothers me that the engine sounds are the same from inside the plane as outside? Also, since you have a good sound system and I don't can you go here http://mail.ckm9.com/moustic/fsdoe/index1.html and download the Spitfire and B-17 sounds and tell me what you think? The b-17 file is large but kicks ass on my little speakers. I don't remember the spitfire sound, I think I use it. [This message has been edited by Jerry (edited 05-01-2000).] IP: Logged |

Spanky here... YES YES YES YES YES YES YES That positivly SUCKS ASS, HUGE FAT LIKE MY MOMS ASS. Its horrible. In one your standing out in front or beside and engine with the mufflers and prop flaping in the air. In the other, your sitting in a big aluminum can BOLTED to this massive beast all rattling and humming and such. Alot of the high end should be dimmed and a couple new sounds added for alll the parts rattleing and humming. I guess thats too much to ask. I fully exspect that even the next round of SIMs won't do this. I'll download and check that sound out. Thanks for the link. IP: Logged |

Sorry about the links. It's been months since I downloaded the files. I'll try to email the files to you. I'm pretty sure the links to the loading screens still work, I wonder why the sounds don't?IP: Logged |

From ga-source.We have also digitally recorded all of the planes engines, across their rev ranges and broken the recordings down into thier elemental sounds. We than use our own home developed software to reconstitute the engine sounds in the correct mix for the engines current state. This means that you hear no ‘loops’, but more impressively the engine sounds seamlessly respond to your actions with the throttle, not only the pitch, but the whole texture and characteristic of the engine sound will change realistically through the whole rev range. ------------------ Jagdverband 44

Spanky here.. Well on this topic again. There was a post about sounds from ww2 online on furballmag.com http://www.wwiionline.com/shots.html#movsound like he says they arn't being generated by the in game sound enging but more of a visualation of what he wants to create. They are the sounds he will be using for in game though. And I must say i'm impressed with them. As long as there is the sound engine to back it all up (sounds like ALOT of channels) it should be sweet. I can feel the ground combat already.
