An interesting read over at www.dogfighter.com in their boards section on the upcoming release of IL-2 Sturmovik.

IL-2 is due out this fall. As it won't be fully supported as yet along the open plane road as SDoE,thou, it may turn out to be.

But, by reading Oleg Maddox's posts, one can get a good read on the support the game will be given

Its simply being published/programmed all together different from SDoE it won't suffer the lack of support (hard code)SDoE is.

This isn't taking a jab at Mike H. or Inertia/Parasoft, but rather the unfortunant
structure of the release and ownership difficulties of SDoE.

The Padlock issue is totally resolved in IL-2 thanks to some gracious Open-Minded behaviour on Oleg's part and my persuasive determination.

As it sounds as if IL-2's Padlock will be fully overhauled from SDoE's model, he has agreed to give the host a checkbox to Disable Padlock.

This will open up IL-2 to a much Broader Audience of Purchasing $$'s that unfortunantly SDoE has locked itself out of.

Air Warrior,Warbirds, and Aces High, the big 3
in Online WWII multiplay that strives further for total realism than most others DON'T offer Padlock as a viewing option.

And why they don't is a well known and beaten issue regarding fairness and online playability.

These folks have, are, and will continue to be Instantly turned OFF by SDoE's inability to provide a way to turn OFF padlock in online play.

And by looking at the number of registered viewers,#'s of folks found online playing SDoE these days, its rather obvious.

Yes, the damage bug and mismatchs aids in this, but I can assure you, Padlock is also a factor.

For those of you who would like to join in on the finer aspects of WWII Aerial Combat and enjoy the truely last undiscovered frontier.......... the hunt & proper ID sequence of Dogfighting, feel free to join us in IL-2 when it surfaces, or promote a proper patch in SDoE.

I quite frankly, have grown tired of the lack of support for a much richer online experience in SDoE in regards to the
"All Compromising Padlock" and refuse to play online anymore.

I do however continue to drop by and DL some of the wonderful creations by such talented folks up here, and for that,I'm truely grateful........thanks!

I thought sense you were bringing up sacred cows which no ones minds will be changed on, and both sides think they are right. I'd give you some others.

I think it's wise to have it as an option for online play. After all, this is a religious issue, and if both religions can enjoy the game, so much the better.

One thing that strikes me as odd in this religious war, though, is the word realism. Padlock makes things easier than in the real world, no one denies that. Lack of padlock makes things harder than in real life. Neither is realistic in any way at all.

I've read alot of whats over there, it's interesting to see the public hype, and how game designers tell us things will be supported.... shame that rarely ever really happens though.. it is all a good read though, hope he pulls it all off and that it does get good support after release.. do I sound enthusiastic?

Spanky here...

I personally don't have a problem with padlock that DOESN'T give the person using it an advantage.

I think calling anyone who doesn't use padlock more "hardcore" is just stupid. Sorry rattler. But in its essence padlock is the only way to get True realism. Its not our fault that no company has pulled it off.

Again I say. What will you do when VR head sets become more common place and you have to fight someone with one, with you using a 17" monitor?

They will have the advantage cause they will be able to look around like a REAL pilot.

You will be stuck using your old fashion hat or number pad keys.

Will you ask for a way to disable that person from turning his head?

I agree with both sides of the padlock argument to some extent, myself, I personaly think there's no advantage, since everyone has the option of using it, OK, it's not perfect for whatyou might call "hardcore" fliers, but at the time it was the best they could do, and it seems that we can't change it, so we live with it. But Il2 sounds very good so far, and if they do back it up, then it could be very good, but it sounds like you still wont get the ability to build and add things like we can here, it's just one of those "wait and see" things, but to be honest, I'm not looking for other flight sims, I got my hands fully learning what I can do to this one! =============================================

In SDoE when one wishes to host a game where
Finding and Id'ing a plane all on your own is desired,Padlock is a HUGE advantage.

Thats Plane & Simple.

And,like I said,support here is minimal,if at all

Shame, this game could have been........
so much more.

Nat,

Some folks can't stand to use Padlock, so much so,that using it really isn't an option.

But, when one guy uses it to locate all aircraft.........

Behind mtns.
Underneath his wing.
Behind his headrest.
Behind the clouds.
And instantly toggle thru all enemy aircraft and there relationship to his WITHOUT spotting them first......
I could go on.........

Its a FULL compromise to the settings of

HUD OFF
Enemy aircraft on map OFF
Clouds ON
(when the other poor sap can't see such things that the Padlocker is getting away with)

Honestly, No-One can see the advantage?

Either I'm stumped or someone is telling little white lies to me

And yet you miss the point again Rattler....
It seems that you have a selective memory in regards to the conversations that we have all had about padlock in the past.
We all agree that SDOE's padlock is too much.. even those of us that like it.
But you have some really messed up ideas about how people move their heads around.
This is something to remember about the online games that you mentioned.... they are just updating the same old engine they have been using since they started... which (correct me if I am wrong) all started as 2d based cockpits which will not support a functioning padlock view. So your argument is mute especially when you call games that allow you to have a squad of both allied and axis.... yeah, that is super realism.
Get a grip and remember that your way isn't the best way, just as padlock isn't the best.. but for both are best for the groups that use them.

Mirthain EXACTLY

Yes SDOEs padlock is horrible and i don't use it. BUT i would use one that was better designed.

and it can be done.

You keep saying that people won't play SDOE because there is no option to turn it off. What about the people you will be shutting out BY turning it off? It will happen.

Mirthain,

All 3 of the big 3 that I spoke of have Full Historical Arena's that don't have allied aircraft vs allied aircraft offered for the realism crowd.

Aces High has a full 3D cockpit with NO Padlock.

Aces High is Created by Dale Addink, who created Warbirds and alot of the best features of Air Warrior, again your ignorance
is calling out.

I've mentioned a simple point about this game.

It has a Terrible to say it lightly..... Padlock.

Is it too much to ask for a way to shut the damned thing OFF?

I don't think so, but than again, I must be wrong

Go ahead and play Space Invaders Online, I'll wait for Real Settings

OK Spank,

Example:for instance;

Lets assume SDoE has Unlimited Ammo by default.

And I ask for a checkbox to disable Unlimited Ammo and Enable Realistic Ammo.

You'd reply I'd gathter that there shouldn't be such a checkbox provided as it keeps too many people out?

Padlock is in SDoE,every bit of an utter embarassment as asking for Unlimited Ammo.

Fix it for now simply with a way to Disable it, and scheme a way to fix Padlock correctly (if at all possible ?)for the long term.

Fail to see the logic in that, and I simply can't explain it to you any clearer.

Tailslide:
We can either admit we have a problem and correct it, or bow our head in shame, and claim it could be fixed with no realistic expectation of actually believing it will be,and let it carry on as the embarassment to this game that it is,and do nothing.

I prefer the former, but hold no faith that it will be, and see sparse integrity in regards to this issue in this community.

And,its a shame

Look i'm fine with a no padlock switch. BUT since this community is so small i don't think we can afford to start grouping into Padlock and no padlock right now.

Heck alot of the time we are still flying with hud on.

I'm sure you would love to bitch about that too.

We have that switch and only about 20% of the games i fly in have it off. And I don't host so don't say its cause i want it on.

Why arn't you bitching about that?

I think game options are a good thing, always. Well, there are limits to how much you can have before it becomes unreasonable, but in general, though, it makes the game accessible to a larger polulation without shutting some groups out.

or if you like cut and paste..

>In WWII, pilots could not hit a button and
>have their head auto-track targets.

They didn't have to bother with hitting any buttons to track targets, they could just move their head

>Padlocking a plane when its out of sighting
>distance,whips around your six,over your
>head,ect,is totally lame in my
>opinion.

I agree.. it sounds to me you are saying a poorly designed padlock feature is a cheat.. and it is. Thats why I said fix the padlock not remove it.

A well done padlock feature enhances realism rather than takes away from it IMHO. I've flown sims where you can't engage padlock on anything thats not centered in your view, and it breaks off when the target goes out of your view.. it's great, much easier (and more realistic) than fumbling around with a hat.

Spank,

The way it stands now with no way to disable padlock, Hud might as well be left on.

Under today's options if Hud is disabled, icons dissapear and only the non-padlockers are blind.

With a checkbox to disable padlock, if hud and padlock are disabled then both padlockers and non-padlockers have to aquire and ID their targets by them selves. Also they gotta track the target themselves, and this is where the padlocker would have to smooth pan if he doesn't choose to head snap.

This if the realism I'm talking about, no others.

TS: my point is to disable for now,fix later.
I'm able to fly online with old friends & family that don't use padlock .........
and with a great deal of confidence and play balance, but it sure would be nice to share it with others here, but its not an option now.

I'll just have wait until this fall to support Olegs release which will support me and others in my flight realism genre, and hope it offers the same wonderful flight dynamics and graphical pleasure's I've grown fond of here in SDoE.

Hey Rat, I tried to be nice about that.... I even said I could be wrong about some of those.. but even you could only come up with one that isn't an upgrade from an engine that didn't support 3d.
Back the hell off and stop evanglizing your view as the only correct one. In many points we do agree but it is your tone that is disgusting.
BTW, I was glad to hear that I could help you learn how to exit the mission briefing screens since you are such a realism nut that you actually read the briefings before actually flying a mission.

My 2 cents for Rattler,

Rattler, is it possible for you to hook up with a group of pilots who enjoy total realism like you? And a group you could trust to not use the padlock option? I hate to loose any pilots from online, especially the ones I can shoot down. And no I don't use the padlock. I am sure you could even try just going online and host a mission and ask those involved to turn the option off. If they follow you consistently through the clouds, then you know they be cheating.

I hope to see you online soon.

ok, get this...

Sunday I was having a furball with Qualcast, we were both in Spit IX's.. he was on my tail and I was pulling constant 5.4 g turns, on the very edge of black out, and he was keeping with me, at higher speed, and out turning me, and all the time I'm taking hits from him..... how? He has rudder pedals and I don't. Simple really.. was he cheating because he used pedals and I don't have them.. No, the option is there to use them, and I could go and buy some right...

See the simularity here.

What one person thinks of as fair, the other doesn't, I think the point is, we have padlock for better or for worse, and so far we've not found a way to change it's design, so I think we just have to accept it and stop this whinning and re hashing of a subject that we've been over so many times here it really does get dull.

I've said in the past my opinion of it... I don't use it, but others do, and good luck to them, I don't mind at all, I could spend some time and get used to using it.. but I don't see that much advantage in it, atleast, others using it has made no difference to how I fly, and wether or not I get shot down.

Man, talk about running over the road kill and then backing up again.

Hey, rather than spitting out reasons why it's good or bad, thought I'd put up a possible easy fix suggestion.

What if we could have the padlock or "target acquisition feature" - ie pressing T - select both friendly and enemy planes. This would increase the difficulty of acquiring enemy planes in HUD free furballs plus you'd have to ID your opponent before shooting.

TS: They've got a great Padlock. Still not convinced it won't be "gamed" in the settings I'd like to fly in.

TS: Your seriously worried about getting locked out of fewer than 5% of total online games that you may stumble onto to?

Right now, someone who wishes to use Unlimited Ammo would be locked out of 100% of the Online games.

My desire to not have "The All Compromising" Padlock, locked on me has left me out of nearly 99% of the games Online.

I feel for ya.

Nat:I'm not stuck with SDoE's padlock.....
trust me

And NO, I don't see the simularity in your comparison.Apples & Oranges.......

Padlock in Oleg's IL-2 hasn't been defined as too whether or not it will padlock friendlies ( the previous poster hit the nail on head in this regard )

I'd like to see a Padlock with all the stuff Oleg has revealed thus far and more. 3 levels of options also.

And for Level 3 Padlock:

Padlock only aircraft that are:

1.Inside the gunsite
2.1,000 yards or less away.
3.Padlocks friendly & emeny aircraft.
4.No cycle feature.
5.One also breaks when Padlocked aircraft is more than 2,000 yards away.

Basically, only being used in situations of inclose air combat.

Not being used to indentify, find or artificially aid in tracking.

Still have levels 1 and 2 with unrealistic features that others could use,and host with.

Padlock brings good with bad. In some situations Padlock in its current form in any game I've seen, undermines some desired settings of Id'ing, finding, and tracking aircraft.

In online play, play balancing and fairness is crutial. Padlock is an alternate viewing system thats been heavily critized for its short-cummings in compromising ID'ing, tracking & Locating.

It simply needs to be in the Disabled or Enabled Fields to promote a varity of play

How can we argue if your not around?

anyways ok yes you win put in the switch then
heck I don't even use it so i don't know why I care. I guess its because I want to keep flying with tail and i know he uses padlock.

One thing about padlock. I personally don' think you should have to get the guy in your gunsite to padlock them

WHY? cause thats not how it would happen in the war. You wouldn't move your head in jerks trying to track the guy into your foward view (it using the # pad) in real life so why in a sim.

I really can't come up with a solution except make an area the same size as your guns sight in all the other views usable for locking as a padlock target OR make it so you have to click on them with a mouse cursor (YUCK)

I'm just saying thats how i feel. sorry

Rattler, for some reason I seem to have become an SDOE kinda guy, thing is, with SDOE we're stuck with this padlock, now I don't mind it, you and some others do, I don't know what to tell ya, maybe Il-2 will have a great padlock, and good for them, but I fly SDOE so I just have to accept that it's not perfect, but as I said, in all honesty it doesn't bother me, I never give it even a seconds thought when I'm flying.

If it bothers you that much and you don't fly online because of it, or you buy a better modled game then thats good for you, lets face it, it's a game, newer games should be better as they learn from every other games mistakes, and if Il-2 has what you want then I really am happy about that, I fly for fun, and if you aint gettin fun from it for any reason at all, then I'm sure sooner or later you will find one that you like, and I do hope that you do. I don't buy fight sims much, I don't buy many games to tell the truth, so I'm not always looking for this or that being better, just something I like, wether it be a shootem up, or a sim.

Go with what you get enjoyment from and damn the world I say!
