Has anyone worked on or is working on a terrain map of the Mediterranean area? I think missions in the defence of or the attack on Malta would be very interesting. If no one is, how do you get started making a new terrain map?

Silas,

the African Theatre *is* a terrain map of a part of the Mediterranean. And, according to your suggestions, even Malta is included: Itīs the third Island from above. The upper one is Sicilly (hope the typing is right, lower part of italy, nothing to do with V.D.), the small one is named Gozo, part of State Malta also. Nevertheless historically incorrect activison in some of the factory-build-missions put Malta under Axis rule, so feel free to correct this and present the community a bunch of correct Italy-and-Malta-Missions. Maybe with some Italian skins included?

Not only is the control of malta completely wrong, but have you guys ever seen any pictures of malta? HELLO??? It looks NOTHING like the map. Same goes for most of our other maps, too, except for the cliffs of dover themselves. I was just in that part of France and the towns look NOTHING like what we have in the game, and I even got a map of the rhineland online a while back in the area of our map, and the river's course is COMPLETELY different....

Youīre right, Werner.
Iīve been on Malta physicaly and sure, nothing in the Game looks like the real island. In fact nothing in SDOE at all is correct both historic and topographic. Nevertheless, the flying is *great*, and, maybee, someday we will have the Dome of Mostar and the Fortress of Valetta as an ground model.

p.s. Werner, your surname isnīt historically correct, too ;-). The right typing must be "Moelders", cause of the german "ö" *g*

Vau, joking

Vau - I've seen it translated into english with the two points over the o (and no oe), but I don't want to mess with text formatting on the forum. I recall a swedish member of our group used some specialized characters and it caused problems (now that's my story and I'm sticking to it... )

I would, after final exams in June, be willing to assist a 3D modeller redesign the towns in the Calais area (I'll paint). Standing offer, in any case.

I sincerely hope that when new terrains are made, every attempt is made to ensure hydrographical, topographical and architectural authenticity. Given the small size of our terrains, surely we can make sure that they are as accurate as possible. Otherwise we're left with a slightly prettier and much smaller version of those OTHER so-called sims.

I don't agree when you say it should be easy to make historically accurate maps, even small ones. I know quite well Normandy, and I can tell you that everything changed between 1944 and now (bocage is far less dense ...). Maps of that time, if you can find some, are unaccurate ...
I know, I am trying to make a 1944 Normandy terrain ...

jeanba - Who said it would be easy? I didn't.

What am I missing here?

Is there any way of increasing the map size
from 40x40 miles. It would be nice to have
something a bit more realistic in scale than
the current maps, at least as an option (I'd want a DVD to hold a whole map of Europe on a
1:1 scale - I wouldn't be able to install it
all!!!)

At least the vertical resolution of the maps
is a bit more plausible than the current
Warbirds Med terrain which has some bizzarely
precipitous mountains!

Werner,

A small terrain is much harder than a large one :
On a large map, you may logically "spread" important features all over the map. On a small map, it is quickly overcrowded.
In my case, I find an allied airstrip right on a 20% slope : what do I do ?

jeanba, we're still crossing wires here buddy - I NEVER SAID IT WOULD BE EASY!! I said that "surely we can do a good job on small maps" - You don't have to compress everything and the kitchen sink into our 40x40 grid: If it was there during the war, include it as-was, if not, don't include it: It's as simple as that, imho.
