Sorry to post this here, but I think this is relevant to the state of the game as well as that of the forum...

Now that the add-ons are piling up, perhaps it's time to organize the downloads section. Is there any way it could be subdivided into individual sections for patches, online packs, planes, vehicles, terrains, tools, etc.? This would really benefit the steady stream of newcomers who don't know where to find stuff.

The more organization, the better.

Spanky here...

Thats exactly why I suggested an automated site that people can upload too. It would keep everything current and everything in one place. And it could be hosted on fightersquadron.com

Also you could send out emails everytime it was updated with whats new on the page.

I really don't think its that hard to set up but know one wants to do it I guess.

At the moment, the only way I know of to do this is to create separate sections off the main board.

Unfortunately, while there might be a need, considering that we can't get people to consistently use the sections we have now, I'm skeptical that more sections will help

As far as an auto-download, no-maintenance ftp goes, I've asked for information and cgi on how to do this and gotten silence in reply.

I'd be willing to bet more people would use the downloads section if it was organized into categories.
The subject headings for the downloadables should also be standardized. For instance, for planes you should have...

{name of plane} {date submitted}

... and that's it.

Anyway, perhaps someone else could produce the page to do all this and then we could have the "Downloads" section just link to that.

No don't make a section on the forum use a site like razors and dogmas.
http://www.3dgw.com/simfiles/
Check how you can upload and click on SDOE to see the SDOE file list. IF it was seperated into sections for each thing it would be great. And you could have it overwrite the older versions so only the newest version was on the site.
Just keep the zip name the same (or maybe not) and have the readme tell you the version.

This would be the only place people would upload and download from. And for people that like to host their files on there own site it can link to them.
IT would all be organized and always be up to date. And you wouldn't need anyone to baby sit it.

It just needs a little organizing and it will be perfect. And i'm 99% positive that you can have the site make custom emails everytime new stuff is uploaded and send it out to everyone signed up.

That's going a bit too far. All I'm saying is that the "Downloads" section here needs to be organized into categories.

I like the fact that the "Downloads" section here is in UBB format. But, couldn't we just have it link to another UBB, but with categories of downloads rather than categories of discussion?

That way, people would just post links to their files rather than having to upload.

Tail,

Maybe I'm missing something, but the page link you gave appears to only have a mailto link. This still requires a human to download the file, upload it to the final site and modify the pages to reflect the changed/new aircraft.

MH,
Can you setup PHP on your server? d0gmA told me he would do the work if you can enable it to work. He said it works on Linux systems. That enables people to upload stuff to my site without me doing anything. They can add pictures and other things as well. If you have any questions, just email me.

Here's what I'm suggesting...

We could use the old forum for this... that forum is just sort of sitting there, so why not put it to use? After all, Lector and those guys put a lot of work into it. Just delete the old content and reconfigure it to look like this...

Thats not a bad Idea JT but can that page email ya?

And the great part of the page me Razor747 and dogma are talking about is that it will host the files. SOme people have trouble with finding them. But now we won't.

It won't be so prone to clutter either cause people won't be able to post just responces about a plane.

And it keeps everything right on FS.com

Looks good to me. We should probably add a category for skins. Sites that have more than one category would be listed in each category. A site description should be required also, not just a link. The description could contain number of planes, skins, etc.

Well, OK, it doesn't have to be UBB, but whatever it is, it should be kept extremely simple. The front page should only contain the categories of downloadables... no images, banners, or extraneous links. I would also avoid using images within the categories as well, since this would require the uploader to make an image.

JT,

That looks great to me and sounds simple to accomplish in almost no time at all. We need this type thing immediately. Yes, maybe it doesn't do everything, but it would really make life easy for a newbie trying to get into SDOE.

Great idea JT!

Condor out

TS,

I think he means that in order to upload a plane you have to email the plane to somebody.

Are you guys talking about the page i'm talking about?

Man. The page does EVERYTHING buy it self. You upload the plane. In a way email it I guess. BUT no one does any work. The program does it all. The program puts it on the server for you and updates the listing of planes with the new one and any text or pics you want displayed with it.

THen that program ALSO sends out an email to everyone stating that a new plane or other add on is avalible on the page.

Everything is FULLY automated. Thats the best part, no one needs to BABYSIT it. And ALL the planes are on the wwww.fightersquadron.com server.

Along with the page itself. The link would be in the left hand menu when you first log on to the page.

If you wanted to use a link to your page then it could do that too since some people like it better that way.

You could also mirror the page so it was never down like this weekend.

Spanky,
The FlightLine page is excellent, but I wouldn't send a new person there. Like I said, the front page should just be a list of categories and nothing else. Also, it should be comprehensive.

JT it wouldn't be on the flight line. I would be its own page.

It would be right to the files.

Just as you ask
