I live in the boonies. No cable modem, no DSL. If I get directpc would that speed up my gameplay? I know it works well for downloads, but never heard anything about on line gaming...

Spanky here..

Hi man. It will only help your DLs and probly hurt gaming

You still need a modem connection. thats your upload and your DL has a high ping from being sent all over and from bouncing off a Sat.

Whats your modem? what speed are you connecting at?

Modem is a US Robotics Sportser connection speed is typically 46k.

If its true that this wouldnt help gaming at all, then you just saved me several hundred dollars. (as well as a go around with the appropriations comittee (wife) )
Thanks

You can turn the dish off (I think, I can put you in touch with an old college bud who had it - works for Ameritech, and is going to try to get DSL to where he is at) and just use your modem.

Spanky here..

With that modem and connection you shouldn't have any probs with online SDOE. Thats what I use and the speed I connect at.

IF your looking for faster DLs and surfing then it could be cool but it won't hurt gaming. Having it and turning it off for gaming could be a great idea. You should be able to use it for Sat TV too which could help offset the cost a bit.

Lets hope some more hispeed connnections come out to help us guys in the boonies.

Actually, if you turn it off it'll cause pauses every five minutes or so. When you have a network card installed Windows goes out and looks for a DNS ever few minutes. Every time it does that it ties up the CPU completely. What you see in games is four or five 3-second pauses every five minutes. That's really annoying when you're in the middle of a game.

I have DNS and netBEUI turned off and only TCIP installed for protocols. The reasoning, DNS and netBEUI periodically (and repeatedly) cause the computer to go see who is there (netBEUI) and if the DNS is there. The more protocols you have, the more processing required to figure out what kind of packet you just received. Everything is happy as long as all of your computers have the same first 3 trinomials.

Snickers-

Plus it is frigg'n expensive. They have different packages where you get so many hours per package $$$. I live in BFE too and had looked at alternatives. It sucks being in an area that is back-aswwards. =)
