First, I have to thank all you guys again for all the great work you have done on improving sdoe!!!My challenge and request is this: I would like to see how detailed/realistic we could get the damage model. Specificly, I would like to see bullet holes show up on the plane and increase as more hits are made. This would let you judge how bad off you are (similar to the smoking engine - you know shortly you gonna blow up very soon type thing). I would like the pilots to be woundable and have some way to know when the pilot is injured and all the way up to, well.. dead. Maybe a health indicator or red sploches on the cockpit. I know all of this is possible. I know it is also alot of work. I am just hoping someone would be willing and able to modify an existing plane( pick a plane any plane) and see if it is doable. I really do know this is asking alot, but if done successfully, I beleive no other sim could compete with sdoe. Condor out ------------------

Well, while one can truly do a lot with Open Plane, one must keep in mind that it's actually quite limited in functionality. We're not pushing the limits yet, but some things are just not possible without making changes to Open Plane. One such thing is to put a damage decal on the spot where a bullet hit. In fact it's not even possible to distinguish between the damage created by a bullet, a nearby flak or a collision.Hmmm... I was just going to say that a health indicator is another impossibility, as there's no way to query the health state of an object, but there I'm wrong; It is possible :-) _ /Bjorn. IP: Logged |

Thanks for reply bjorn.I would not really care to have the damage be that realistic. As damage occurs via bullets, flak, or collision, some sort of holes should show up to visually indicate damage has occured. I am hoping some sort of damage lods could be swapped in as the damage happens. I am not even saying I want the holes exactly where the bullets hit either. I just want say, 3 holes per plane part to indicate minor damage, 6 holes to indicate moderate damage, and 9 holes to indicate your are in deep dog dodo. I think that is currently possible although it maybe bad on the fps. Great news on the health indicator. Condor out ------------------

FYI, the Fokker DVII has some of what you are talking about as far as damage. There are 2 levels of damage and with the 2nd not only do the textures changes, but holes and rips appear in the wings. This was realy an after thought and done more to see how it worked and if it would be practical for future releases. Well the outcome was good, so Raider and I hope to make better use of this kind of damage modeling. ------------------ Zoycite 33rd~GS visit The War Paint Factory IP: Logged |

I have a strong feeling you will see this added to the Dauntless.. likely to have seperate damge textures for fuse and/or wing damage.

Condor, It seems that every plane is made up of many individual parts, and each have a certain amount of damage they can take before failing. So bullet holes would have to be an indicator of either the overall damage taken, or the state of the critical parts that would surely result in an out of control plane. Perhaps, they could alter the color of each part that is hit. A part could turn yellow when damaged, then gradually red until it is destroyed. It wouldn't be visually very realistic, but it would be better than no visual damage at all as it would give some damage feedback rather than nothing. The best would, of course, be to swap out the textures of these original objects with damaged textures if this was possible. Either would give other pilots the ability to see damage on a plane when they get close up. The great news is it appears this engine will live and breathe its' life into a FS II sim someday (though not with that name). Why reinvent the wheel. I would hope that visual damage would be seriously looked at to make the, already best flight sim engine, even better. IP: Logged |

Zoycite, I love your dammage model of the FokkerDVII! I hope that one day, all of the WWI aircraft will that that type of model.IP: Logged | |
