Since installing the PP5.3 OR Corsair and/or Zero plane packs has anybody noticeda) Abnormal lag online? b) Abnormal lag over a LAN? I play both, and both are now screwed. Nat reports the same for online. We have both re-installed the game numerous times. I have re-installed my Network cards, protocols etc etc etc numerous times, to no effect. I have altered the settings in as many combos as I can think, to no effect. I have definitely narrowed-down the cause to multiplay SDoE. We need to know if anyone else has had dimilar problems. Ta. Hi, Siggi!I have the corsair and zero ( 1.3 ) but have only flown online with them twice. Still, noticed no increased lag at all. Only problem I had was with the Hurricane..had some really weird things happen both on and off-line. Including a complete freeze up in the game online, which hadn't happened since I tried Overclocking my old 300A to 450; also, strange FPS readings, black screens out of nowhere, messages that game expected my Voodoo2 card and none found. Stuff like that. Finally removed the Hurri, and all has been working well since. Sorry I don't have more info on the Corsair or Zero - or 5.3. All seems to be working as well as before them.

Thanks Nealg. It remains a mystery as to why some people are getting this prob with different a/c. PP5.3/different a/c, weird. IP: Logged |

well, my problem started with PP5.3, and I've not found a way to solve it yet... although we're trying.. had a thought, I've not tried online recently, but had 2 fresh windows installations since the last time, so maybe I'll give it a go and see if after that, and a number of FS re~installs helps. I know ppl will say that PP5.3 has nothing in it that should really make playing online pointless to try... but then, we have models that wont work in Glide and only in D3D.. that shouldn't happen either right? I was having really bad FPS rates (3fps on a athlon600 with 32meg ram and a blaster banshee that had been doing 40fps solid). I noticed that when the frame rate dropped, the ground textures kept swapping out (a field would suddenly become coastline or runway, then field again). I deleated my texture caches to try to clean the problem, but it still continued. Last night I deleated everything and reinstalled. I followed these steps in installation: CD CD Patch (I was being extra slow) Test- okay Patch Test- okay Meatwater Test- okay Plane pack Test-okay I'm about to apply the plane pack patch and test again tonight. Then I'll apply the nations pack, then the contest planes, and finally the WWI planes. My problem started around the install of the plane pack patch or the WWI planes. If the install causes a drop tonight I'll post the results. IP: Logged |

Nice one Goth. I've tried un-installing SDoE but it never totally goes from the hard drive. When I re-install it I get only the option to "Re-install", not "Install". Clearly parts of it remain lurking somewhere in the registry. Anyway, I've re-installed it and tried it with firstly only the CD and 1.5 patches...no joy, still lags over my LAN. Then added PP5.3...still lags. Finally added the F4U and Zero...still lags. As far as I'm concerned the culprit is PP5.3. Somehow it has damaged the multiplay code within the game, even causing my modem to totally stop functioning until I re-install it's drivers and protocols. That no longer happens after running SDoE over my LAN since I re-installed Windows98 over itself. This is yet another nail in SDoE's online coffin...sorry to be harsh but that's just the way it appears to be.IP: Logged |

To eradicate SDOE, I only had to use the add/remove programs feature in control panels, then I deleated any left over folders. I didn't need to clean my registry or anything drastic. I'm curious why you're only getting re-install options. Is it possible you have more than one instance of SDOE on your system (like a beta build).I wouldn't jump to the conclusion that its a plane Pack issue yet. There are a lot of factors to account for still. It could be a hadware defect or setting change, it could be conflicts in software or drivers, or background process in the machine. What I saw was a graphics problem. What you see is a lag problem. Its just too many factors to come to a conclusion. Since you tested the LAN for lag with just the basic install and the online standard patch and still had lag, I would doubt its the Plane Pack. How many machines are on your LAN by the way? And what CPU's, memory, and cards are they built on? IP: Logged |

Yeah, thats jumping too much Siggi, after all, there's only 3 of us that have been crippled for online flying since installing PP5.3a IP: Logged |

I un-installed SDoE, then cleaned it's remnants from the registry. This time I got the option to "Install" instead of "Re-install". But no difference. I have two PC's on my LAN.P2-450 with 395RAM and a TNT2-ULTRA. P3-600 with 256RAM and a Ge-Force DDR. The 450 runs SDoE fine and smooth in LAN play; the 600 staggers. Both run fine in single player mode. I have narrowed it down to this: Either PP5.3 and/or F4Upack+patch and/or the Zero have somehow corrupted my LAN and Internet registry settings. This obviously doesn't effect every PC similarly. The only solution I think I can now try is to reformat my hard drive and re-install windows. Drastic measure I know, but I've tried everything else. C'est la vie. IP: Logged |

Before you wipe it clean you might try installing video drivers, sound drivers and DirectX. Those are the three things I've seen that most often go stale in Windows. Maybe one more might be your network drivers.IP: Logged |

Mighty, I see what your saying... and I see what Siggi is saying.. I've just not had the balls to re-format cause I only have the 1 HD, I've been through this all before in the Help Forum.. if this problem is SDOE based it's i PP5.3, I had all this well before the F4U and Zeke etc...I've been there and done it all, believe me, nothing works, so I just gave up flying online now ( I have one last time of trying, not tonight though, I've re-installed windows fresh recently, twice infact, so I've yet to try it to see if thats helped.. we'll see IP: Logged |

Nat, you're up way past your bed-time again! The weirdest thing is that off-line SDoE rockets. 50+ FPS with eight fighters on the screen. But multiplay, either LAN or internet, and it goes to hell. I just can't figure it at all. It's like there's a bottleneck somewhere.IP: Logged |

Update:I'm now getting clouds flickering on and off. I was running a LAN test, smooth as silk on the 450, staggering on the 600. I then came out of the game on the 450 and the 600 immediately went to smooth as silk. It's not the network card because the same problem exists with internet play, which uses the modem. It's not SDoE's core code because I never had LAN or internet probs in the past, only since installing PP5.3, Corsairs and Zero. I've really worked hard on narrowing this down, it's 4.45am here and I'd like a medal please. Whatever, the Zeroes vs Corsairs in AirCombat3 rock offline. Well they did before the new flickering-clouds appeared. I don't mind really, the community is what I come here for; SDoE hasn't done it for me for so long, despite it's beauty. Too many bugs just spoil the pleasure. I really hope to see a SDotP one day, with all the good stuff in and the crap out. "Yes, I'll drink to that!" IP: Logged |

Siggi.. how would you like to join me in an offline mission, we can both pretend the other is out there, I'll invite some of my imaginary buddies, like Nealg, Esox and elf, we can al pretend that we're actually back in the old days, flying and being rammed to death online, cause I have the feeling thats all we got leftIP: Logged |

update-Last night I loaded the plane pack patch and still could not replicate my error. I did go on-line and play my first online mission in 5 or 6 months (thanks Tailslide for the game). I held a good FPS of 40-70. I didn't see any lag problems, although I did see the bomber bug, and the online damage problem (that or it was a really tough FW I was up against). So the problem isn't in any of the online standard programs or patches. I'll add nations, contest planes, and the WWI additions during the rest of the week. I'm guessing my problem was just an anomoly caused by user error, not due to the user created additions. IP: Logged |

Problem replication: I was online tonigt, but got a mismatch. So re-reinstalled the 5.3a patch to the plane pack. Suddenly, I have the CDT bug on the JU88, and I have a big slowdown in FPS (to 4fps again).Tonights install went as follows: Add sdoe control (hmmmmm) test seemed okay. Add Gunjam sounds (no test) Online and got mismatch. Reinstall 5.3a change sdoe control options to joystick deadzone, move fog out to 25 miles. test- frame rate drop. It seems the problem for me is in one of these three programs. Gunjam Sounds (doubtful, although there is always a hesitation as the disk is accesed the first time a fire a shot). SDOE Control (I'm very curious about this) 5.3a plane pack patch (I wonder if there is a problem with the patch since there are mismatches even though I had installed it already. Did a re-install further corrupt my files?). Any help or guesses. I'll be reinstalling tomorrow. I'll leave off sdoe control and the gunjam sounds this time.

Fog at 10 on a p2-450 computer will let you stay at 20 fps on most all missions. TS

Goth, curious about sdoe control? 25 miles and a framerate drop, hmmmm, now that's curious! Let me say here, sdoe control does not interfere with the game code nor multiplay, modem inits or even the extra sugar in your tea. It is simply a user interface for the ini settings and only alters what is available in the sdemons.ini file or adds some lines that the 1.5 patch made available. So there! What you do with the options is your own business, but the fog set at 25 miles is not healthy!

I'll drop the fog setting and see. It holds about 40fps at that distance until a flyby occurs in padlock. The the frame rate drops to 4fps for about 45 seconds and jumps back up to 40fps.IP: Logged |

That sounds like the clue. The auto-zoom on the padlock gives you such a wide angle of view that you see many ground tiles at once. You're running out of texture handles in the program. Bring the fog in and it'll reduce how many ground tiles we draw to a reasonable number.IP: Logged |

OK, apologies in advance if this one is too obvious, but, are you guys running Voodoo3 cards? If so, there is a known bug for online games IF you allow the little modem icon to be displayed in your "systray" at the bottom of your screen. You must disable this in your dial-up networking properties. (Connections--Settings--Show an icon in taskbar should be unchecked on a Win95 system; not sure what the procedure is for W98 or W2K). If you let the modem icon be displayed, FPS<10 is the norm... Might not be the problem of course.
