Well, what they lack in taste they make up for in impact. You can find them at www.fshangar.com And just for contrast here is a model of one of the original aircraft. ------------------ Yardstick painted this

Thanks Deigo, but Dan's excellent template and the slightly higher resolution of the P-47 texture map certainly helps more than just a little I finished 'The Mole' last night and will post it off to 'The Hangar' later today. ------------------ Yardstick painted this

Thanks to Razer's swift response time Straight from the factory, I introduce 'The Mole'. If anyone has some good links to either pictures of models or good colour plates of 8th AAF bubble-topped P-47D (25 or 30 series) could they post them please. I have lots for the 56th's hot rod 'M's but very few of either 56th, 78th or 353th 'Superbolts'. I think these were the only 8th AAF fighter groups that used the bubble top Jug. The others had converted across to the Mustang by then I think. ------------------ Yardstick painted this

Great work, gang... keep 'em coming. Say, anyone have pictures of Mexican Bolts? Also, was the Russian squadron of Thunderbolts a true Russian squadron or were they just American and British pilots operating out of Russia?

Very nice Yardstick! The only problem is that there are too many brilliant schemes to choose, as stated above!Seeing that you are using the AeroMaster decal sheets as referance, have you seen the one with 'Big Ass Bird 2'? i attempted to have a go at it and i got a half descent job but i couldn't get the wrighting quite right! You reckon that could be your next one? it is a very pretty ship with a red nose and orange/blue/red stripes on rudder and tailplane! IP: Logged |

Biggles, I have considered it and will probally have a shot at it soon. But for now I am turning to more 'tasteful' schemes (read non 9th AFF). I am an 8th AFF fan at heart and really want to do that Air Force justice first. I am slowly working on 'Butch III' a well know 353th bubbletop and have my eye on a couple of good 56th schemes. ------------------ Yardstick painted this

The best resource I have found for the T-Bolt Schemes in the Squadron Signal Books. This weekend I can sit down and go over all the 8th aaf groups and figure out the tail markings and colors. They dont have a lot of color photos, but they are pretty detailed. Also, Opsrey's P47 aces of the 8th Air Force is a good reference too. Most are razor backs, but some details are given on the bubble top aces. I bought 4 books on the P47 (one is PTO) and between those, I can dig up a lot of info. I can scan some candidates for paint jobs. The 8th has some killer schemes...the Wolfpack cammo, the blue cammo and some were black...a nice variety. The Soviet jugs were delivered in the olive drab, gray scheme. Mexican PTO jugs carried the us insignia on one side and the Mexican AF insignia on the other. I can scan pics of those too, as well as brazil, france, and the UK. There is a lot to do....finding the time and willpower is another thing. Being burnt out sucks!! IP: Logged |

Thanks Dan, anything you can scan would be great. I have lots of reference material on the 56th and know the colour schemes of the 8th FGs pretty well but what I am after are examples of individual aircraft. I have literally hundreds of pictures but these are rarely in colour and nearly always of low resolution. The reason I like to use modelling reference material is that the pictures are usually designed to show off the details, particularly nose art. One book that has a massive cross section of colour schemes is 'Flying Colours', by Bill Gunston, published by Salamander - it contains nothing but colour plates of aircraft paint schemes. For 8th AAF the Mighty Eighth series, by Roger Freeman published by Airlife is the benchmark and his book 'Thunderbolt' in a treasure-trove of info in the P-47. 'Zemke's Wolfpack' by William Hess is a good, if a little sterile, history of the 56th. To be honest, I don't think I am going to find much on the 8th AAF D model buble tops as only the 56th used them for any length of time. These were either natural metal or mid grey/mid olive camo. I mean to buy the Osprey series when I have the room to house it. Do you think they would do a bulk discount Yeh, agree on the burnout issue. I'd had it with painting after PP5.3 but I gave it a rest, went off and played some Unreal Tourney, Longbow 2 and Pharaoh and now I am raring to go again - but don't show me another Focke Wulf ------------------ Yardstick painted this

Well, as far as the 8th AF and bubble tops go...I found the 78th FG (which is the olive drab/checkboard scheme I made) and the 353rd FG which has the black and yellow diamond pattern on the cowling. Interestingly, I started this pattern when i first started doing the Jug, but never finished it. It would be interesting to see it in the game. It can be done, but is hard to get it to line up just right. I believe that Butch II is a 353rd Jug.If you really want to get psycho, you need to venture into the 9th and 15th AF...and also the PTO..lots of Jugs there. As pointed out, the 8th was dominated by the Mustang. Which reminds me how bad a new, 'Jug quality' Mustang model needs to be made! IP: Logged |

DanW, i agree 100% on the Mustang model. I think a new fuse with pipes and new prop and spinner would be tons better.------------------

Razer, Just thought I'd mention I ordered that Intuos Art pad. 270 English pounds! Left me white Obviously you Americans get a better deal on this than us! Still, I can't wait to get it, it looks great. BTW, is the size adequate?, doesn't feel a little cramped? Thanks! IP: Logged |
