I`ve got 2 questions about plane that I find most advanced among contest ones - F DVII.

1. Is it normal that plane`s nose goes up without any tension on the stick?

2. AI pilots are not aware that they are not allowed to exceed 200 mph. As effect offline player stays alone after 1 minute of dogfight. What are Your comments on that?

Thanks for a beautiful plane

I'll take this one Zoy.

wasmic,

1.The DVII was tail heavy, most of the WW I planes were. So you would have to keep the stick a little forward to stay level.

2. You are right about the AI flying over 200 MPH. And I thought we trained them better than that. Elric, came up with the solution for this. We will correct this in the contest version. Thanks to Elric.

From what I know this true about the WI planes. This makes them more manueverable. I trim my glider like this for thermaling.

Don't forget WWI planes don't have trim (the SE5a did), so they are "pre-trimmed" for a certain speed. My guess is that these planes should fly level with neatral stick at slow speeds, and the nose up should be more pronoounced at high speed. This is because the Center of Lift is in front of the Center of Gravity. so in a dive, you need much foward stick, the plane looks like it is in what is called a "tuck" position. This is less effecaint, more drag - the tail is fighting to balance the wing. But in turns, etc. the wing can be used more as a lever to tighten the turn.

The faster you go the more the lift of the wing outweighs the lift from the tail, so the off CG is more noticable.

It is recommended that you set the CG of a glider like this: Trim it for level flight. Now go into a 45 degree dive from alt. Build up speed. Now take you hands off the stick (keep stick neatral). If the glider pulls out, your CG is to far back. If the plane steepens its dive, the CG is too far forward.

Then you can tweek it a bit how you like, I fly with CG set back. This is less stable, but more manueavarable.

I may be wrong about things, as always. I mean I'm not always wrong, but ... well .. you know what I mean!

Heya,

Raider and SV are correct. Most WWI craft fly with a nose up attitude. Also from pilot accounts the Dvii can have a very aggressive nose up attitude, even at low speeds, ie T/O speed. This also can attribute to Prop Hang.

The following is a reply I recieved from
Tom Polapink of Old Rhinebeck concerning this very issue and Prop Hang.

"The airplane can maintain flight as the nose is pitched upward at an angle approching 60 degrees off of the horizon. In a steady and very stiff breeze the airplane will almost stand still in the air."

So the answer to #1 is yes.

And as Raider has mentioned, #2 is being worked out

We have tried to model this, but have had mixed results. You get that to work then we lose something else. I hope new foils will aide in our common dilema for accurute WWI Fm's.

In the mission editor you can specify the top speed between waypoints. I made mine 140 max and they stayed up.
cheers
